Hello Zheng Long, I am very glad that you have been interviewed by LiveVideoStack.
First of all, I’m curious, how did you go from being a biology major to a multimedia technology field?



Zheng:First, WHEN I was in middle school, I participated in some youth programming competitions and had some basic understanding and interest in software development. Secondly, when I was in college, I did a lot of software development related to nutrition calculation with the teachers of the school, which laid a certain foundation for software development. After graduation, I was engaged in the field of multimedia by chance.

Compared with those “trained” multimedia technicians, what are the disadvantages and advantages of “halfway home” to engage in multimedia?
If you had to sum up the keys to mastering many media technologies, what advice would you give?



Zheng:Multimedia technology is actually a relatively unfamiliar field for ordinary people, and a journeyman has a cumulative process from 0 to N for multimedia technology, so that I can better understand the feelings and appeals of ordinary users in my daily work.
In fact, multimedia technology is a collection of many disciplines, including computer science, mathematics, informatics and other basic science, its purpose is mainly to better transfer information between people. So I think the key to mastering a lot of media technology is actually two points, laying a solid foundation and digging people-oriented needs.

If you had to choose a new field of technology, would you choose multimedia?
Big data, artificial intelligence is becoming more and more valuable.



Zheng:I think the future direction of technology must be multi-technology integration, such as multimedia × artificial intelligence. Therefore, as a multimedia person, we should go out of the circle and make more collisions with other fields.

Zheng:SRT agreement on streaming media because of its aggressive strategy to ensure the quality of streaming media transmission, because the overhead costs are not suitable for playing the transmission to the customer, so we push the SRT is mainly used in the host flow, upload video, server back to the source of the scene, and some are at a distance, the transoceanic transport scenarios, such as main purpose is to improve the stability of the streaming media, It will also expand into areas such as low-delay live broadcasting.

In addition to SRT exploration, you also developed “narrowband HD” in Bilibili. Could you introduce this part of your research?



Zheng:Bilibili’s narrowband HD technology does less to the encoder itself and is based on machine learning — selecting the most cost-effective combination of coding parameters from various video features. Including video feature engineering, ROI intelligent coding and other key technical points, most of the functions can be applied to X264 and X265 common CPU encoders.

Looking ahead to 2020, which multimedia related technologies, in which industries and application scenarios do you see further development or even explosion?



Zheng:The further multimedia develops, the more closely it should be combined with each specific industry. Multimedia × artificial intelligence, which has been hot for a long time, should continue to be hot. With the development of 5G and other channel technologies, I think uav and multimedia technology on smart wearable devices will also see considerable development.
