Idea stage: Hand drawing with pen and paper

The point of drawing is to express ideas quickly, not to get bogged down in detail and aesthetics

Product launch

Once the product is defined, an internal design team is set up to develop the new product independently. Not only that, but the new team will be separated from the regular office (sometimes even part of the building) to facilitate the internal team’s work. This process allows the product team to focus on the new product development process independently of the company’s normal structure.

Prototype design stage:Sketch + Principle / Flinto

Pixel-perfect Mockups

This process takes a lot of time and effort. The process, says Michael Lopp, a (former) senior Engineer at Apple, is to remove all ambiguity. Therefore, although it takes a lot of time in the early stage, it reduces the time for error correction and correction in the later stage. For designers, it is still recommended to use Sketch for high-fidelity prototyping at this stage. Use with Principle or Flinto to enhance interactive design.

Easy prototyping with Sketch

What I love about Sketch:

1. Simple operation and easy to understand interface

2. Multiple pages can be exported from a project document

3. You can export multiple ICONS or elements independently

10 to 3 to 1

Ten to three to one means that for any new design, Apple’s designers have to come up with 10 completely different simulations. And it’s not “seven of them to make the other three look good,” it’s about letting designers think big. Then they pick three of them, spend some time looking at them, and decide on the best one.

Apple’s New Product Progress Document (ANPP) :Dropbox Paper

Once a design prototype has been selected and the company has agreed to develop it, an Apple New Product Progress Document (ANPP) needs to be developed. ANPP is a document that describes the details of a product’s progress and stages of development, typically shared by the Product Technical Director (EPM) and global Supply Chain Manager (GSM). But who does what at each stage is well documented. This document can be done by an online document collaboration tool such as Dropbox. In addition, the mapping the stage details mentioned in ANPP can also be presented in the form of flow charts. Mind mapping software such as XMind can do this.

Use Dropbox for document sharing and editing

Use XMind to make flow charts

Two weekly meetings

Brainstorming session: XMind

Once a week, there is a brainstorming session between the design and development teams. The focus of the meeting was on optimizing the design. Everyone can come up with his or her own idea without any restrictions, or even “go crazy” to spark inspiration. At this stage, a tool with the ability to brainstorm works best. This phase recommends using XMind to quickly record, organize, and share meeting results with others.

Use XMind to assist with brainstorming sessions

What I like about XMind:

1. Write down brainstorming points in groups

2. Full-screen presentation mode

3. Easy to share with the rest of the team

Executive team evaluation Meeting: Invision

It’s not enough to have a bunch of ideas and ideas. Every Monday, the executive team conducts an internal utility assessment of product development progress. Study small steps to keep the team moving toward the final goal. Also, Apple doesn’t evaluate multiple products or projects at once. Typically, a meeting will focus on a few products, which also ensures the quality of product reviews. While the focus is on development and progress, the team is constantly exploring other possibilities. So it’s also important to keep creative ideas and teamwork. At this stage to recommend InvisionDigital Product Design, Workflow and Collaboration | InVision as team Collaboration tool.

Team evaluation collaboration with Invision

What I like about Invision:

1. Make prototypes online and share them with others;

2. Can be shared directly through Photoshop

3. Allow multiple people to comment on a specific location in the design

Product testing and packaging

After the Beta version of the product is ready, EPM and GSM will bring the product back to Cupertino for senior management to review and feedback. But if companies want user-level feedback, I recommend Better Design. The site allows companies to put up controversial design details and let users vote on what they think is a better option.

What’s interesting to learn about Apple’s design process is that it’s very straightforward, eliminating unnecessary steps. By using these productivity tools, you can get more done with less effort and focus on the job itself.

Have Fun~
