Before Liu Cixin’s imagination of “The Three-Body Problem”, there were many real events in human history that “reduced dimension”.

At the end of the 19th century, for example, the leaders of the world’s great cities met in Earnest in New York to worry about how mankind would handle the horse manure siege in the coming century. But the problem of Europe’s cities being surrounded by horse dung, urine and carcasses was virtually solved when the automobile appeared and was allowed to travel faster than horse-drawn carriages.

As technology continues to evolve and insights into human nature are no longer just a matter for psychologists, but for entrepreneurs as a matter of business, dimension reduction strikes are becoming more frequent, particularly in the Internet industry.

From the perspective of The Chinese Internet, dimension reduction in the first stage mainly occurred in different dimensions of the same “species”, the biggest feature is free to pay.

The first stage

When eBay insisted on payment model, Taobao made a series of innovations around localization, among which free store is its killer feature. Jack Ma’s positioning of Taobao is “to make the world easy to do business”, and eventually Taobao successfully defeated eBay, and derived the infrastructure of China’s commercial system.

During the 15 years from 1991 to 2006, evolution formed the basic pattern of China’s antivirus market. When qihoo 360 launched its attack, it did not have the financial strength and technology accumulation of Ruixing, Jiangmin and Kingsoft, nor the massive user base of Tencent. However, Zhou Hongyi has broken the three-way battle in the anti-virus market by using free tactics and facing strong enemies.

I wonder if the post-1995 and post-2000 generation can imagine that we used to vote for “Super Girl” by texting for 10 cents a piece. By 2017, 1.82 billion SMS messages were sent every day across China, compared with 38 billion wechat messages. For the post-00s and post-10s, SMS becomes a captcha tool, while wechat connects everything.

Second stage

In the second stage, different dimensions of different “species” emerge, from the constraints of customers who have grown into giants, to cross-industry and cross-boundary impacts.

Previously, companies including BAT, JD.com and NetEase were among Its customers. The company specializes in CDN network acceleration business and was called the first stock of Internet acceleration service when it landed on gem in 2009. As Internet users and traffic surged, the giants found themselves paying higher and higher fees to third-party CDN providers each year.

And ali Tencent and other giants to have technology, to have a team, but also have application scenarios, they do THEIR OWN CDN. Now, cloud service providers led by Ali Cloud and Tencent Cloud have woven an intelligent cloud service ecological network that traditional CDN manufacturers cannot break through.

After the rise of Didi and Uber, the broadcasting industry was innocent. While ride-hailing is not going to deal a fatal blow to the entire broadcast market, it does take away a group of users who used to be very loyal to broadcast. Other than private cars, few drivers listen to the radio in their cars. They are busy taking orders or being assigned orders, or chatting with their peers in wechat groups. Radio has withstood the onslaught of television and Internet video, but ride-hailing has been eclipsed.

Two years ago, it was hard to imagine that Little Red Book was beginning to threaten Dianping, which was still a key word in cross-border e-commerce and still a strong player in restaurant reviews. However, xiaohongshu is no longer just about overseas shopping experiences, but also about various consumption experiences and lifestyles such as catering, hotels, travel and home furnishing. Xiaohongshu has become a community “master” of Dianping.

It doesn’t matter that Youiteng is eating into TV stations’ user time and advertising resources, now Douyin and Kuaishou are competing for business. Young people in first-tier cities have long been forced by 996 to watch TV dramas only on weekends, while users in second-tier cities and below, who have relatively more leisure time, spend it on Douyin and Kuaishou. The TV station wants to cry.

The third stage

The third stage, which occurs at similar dimensions in different “groups”, is the ebb and flow of one ecology over another.

First, toutiao’s products stole time from Tencent and Baidu. For some users, brushing Douyin more, spend less time on the game. But the toutiao department did not expect that another more kingly level of product – learning power.

As you can see, this product continues to dominate the App download charts for good reason. One theory is that toutiao’s daily traffic has fallen sharply, from more than 100 million to more than 60 million on toutiao’s main App. It is hard to say how much of this change is due to the learning powerhouse. But it has made it abundantly clear that when the national team goes off, the market juggernaut has to step aside.

There are more than 4 million apps in the Chinese market, but 20 apps can meet users’ needs in social networking, entertainment, e-commerce, news, tools and other aspects. Therefore, from the point of view of the total time of users in the second half of the Internet, all products are standing on the same track, dimension reduction strike also has a new connotation.

However, the term dimension reduction can be overused. Not the Internet into a traditional industry will cause a blow to dimension reduction, only to make up the basic quality of the industry, in order to talk about high latitude. For example, the catering industry will not be reduced simply because new retail factors are added. For the catering industry, the core of the products provided is delicious and good to drink, and delicious and good to drink is always the basic quality of the industry.
