Can you imagine being alone in space for almost a year?

In 1991, Cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev was sent on a mission to the Soviet Space station. The Soviet Union collapsed a few months later, leaving one stranded until the Russian government brought him back to Earth 311 days later. He returned to find his original motherland has been disintegrated.

Inspired by this story, C. C., a visual communication design student of Chuzhou College, created his graduation design work “Star Field”. The C4D 3D animation short film ranked first in the 3D category in the no.205 list of Zcool, attracting great attention from CG fans.

In the short film hoshano, we see astronauts sometimes floating, sometimes chasing, down-to-earth success, but also confused and helpless loneliness. Through this astronaut story, C iii expresses his own views on life and ideals, and also triggers the audience to think about their own living conditions.

Below, let us understand the creation process and the behind-the-scenes story of this work through ruiyun interview!

Ruiyun rendering: Hello, thank you for accepting this interview. Please tell us a little about yourself.

C: Hello, everyone. My name is C. I am a graduate of the class of 2021. My hometown is Shucheng, Anhui.

Ruiyun Rendering: How did you embark on the path of 3D creation? Let’s share with you your experience of learning 3D creation.

C 3: From the early years of school freshmen have a dream is to express ideas, can do a passing mood, can move people’s work, because my major is visual communication, so the university began to learn most is flat, do such things as posters and UI, freshman, sophomore when participating in various games, big wide Jin Du awards, such as, Later, I always felt that it was difficult to express my ideas completely with only one frame. To put it bluntly, I was too clumsy (laughing). Then go to self-study of the photographic camera, hope oneself can through dynamic images to express ideas, but still very difficult, for students, shooting a video too many uncontrollable factors, lighting, environment, actors, and all kinds of expensive equipment, most of the time was very good creative finally because of all sorts of uncontrollable factors are cannot come true. At that time, I saw zeng Shen’s works, and I suddenly found a breakthrough and began to formally contact 3d and C4D. All the problems above were suddenly solved.

As for the 3d learning experience, I also learned 3DS Max for a period of time when I was a freshman, but AT that time, I was thinking of doing interior design in the future. Later, AFTER a period of internship, I thought THAT I was not suitable for it, so I gave up. Until Behance saw many excellent 3D works through station B, and decided to learn 3D again. It was in the second semester of my junior year that I got to know 3d formally. At that time, the epidemic was serious, so I watched various courses at home every day for self-study. Later, I went to Yingsu in the summer vacation.

Ruiyun rendering: what is the inspiration behind xingye? What kind of story does Hoshino tell us?

C 3: Inspiration is the background story, in this thank you very much my tutor Gu Shankai, the most in the beginning, I want to do is to kerry card how Leo forgotten in outer space, in which more than three hundred days he will experience how to mood swings, and disintegration of the Soviet union has been found in he returned to the earth itself and the story of the society, But my mentor told me that I could go a little further, not just focus on Krikalev, but translate his experience into a symbol, a state, that everyone can relate to. Therefore, I re-created the script and deliberately weakened who the character was by using the background of the story and added my own views on life, ideal and society. Finally, I told a story that kept wandering in reality, ideal and bondage, and finally compromised.

Ruiyun rendering: how long did the production take? Did you encounter any difficulties during the creation process? How is it solved?

C 3: The script took more than a month, and the 3D production took about two months. Encountered many technical difficulties, the imagination of the picture can not be realized. When I meet this kind of problem, I will study it myself first, and if I can’t find out, I will ask my friends and so on. If THERE is no way out at last, I will make some concessions and modify it on the premise of trying to be consistent with the original setting.

Ruiyun Rendering: what software and plug-ins were used in the production of Hoshino? Please introduce your production process to us.

C 3: The software is actually C4D+OC+AE. The plug-in uses CDIK, which is an assembled plug-in, and hotD, which is a plug-in for simulating waves.

Process would I started writing a script, and then according to the script to draw the foot part, and then began to do a static shot every scene test, unified style of the picture, and then began to do animation, animation all k, using animation preview to cut a version, and then found that the problem timely change, finally submitted to * *, * * r cloud rendering render farm late synthesis, Cut out a film.

Why did Dylan Thomas’s Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night come to mind at the beginning of Starfield?

C: First, I like the movie “Interstellar” very much. I want to pay tribute to The director.

Secondly, a few of his poems can precisely cover what I want to express. Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was originally intended to express the author’s anger that death took people away from this world. In my film, death represents all kinds of pressure from society. It brings people into a world where they have to give up their ideals for life, so as to express their helplessness towards this phenomenon.

Rayyun rendering: In the film, the astronauts are in space, ocean, city three scenes. Why choose astronauts as the subject of the story? Is there a metaphor behind each scene?

C: Because krikalev is an astronaut in this backstory, the astronaut is chosen as the main subject.

Being in space is the reality, being alone in outer space. Oceans and cities are pressure-abstracted storylines. Floating on the ocean, it’s a sign that the astronaut has lost his ability to control himself, to drift with the waves, and the sea here is a symbol of all kinds of social constraints, family pressures, moral pressures and so on. The city and the astronaut are put together to create a sense of disharmony, highlighting the astronaut and the social incompatibility, reflecting the astronaut in the face of ideal and life is at a loss. The other point is to express krikalev’s inability to adapt to what is happening around him when he returns to earth.

Apart from the reality of the astronauts, every shot actually has its own meaning.

Ruiyun rendering: The short film is divided into three storylines, with the light on the astronaut’s chest as a clue to reflect three different states. Please explain the meaning and inspiration behind it in detail.

C 3: When the astronaut’s lights are off, the astronaut wakes up in space and returns to the spacecraft by the tow rope.

Bright red light represent the astronauts returned to earth bind the family of all kinds of pressure from society, such as in the subway, he saw the elevator in the elevator floor changes will do rocket, jumped into the water found that the bottom is the starry sky, such as petrochemical, gradually are embodies in the pressure, but he has been working hard to achieve their ideal, However, the more he resisted, the greater the pressure would be. Therefore, in this story line, I deliberately created a stronger and stronger sense of pressure. Finally, he gave up resistance completely, and his body was nailed to a cross representing religious ethics and rules.

The bright blue light implies that astronauts are following their ideals and leaving. It represents human exploration of the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and further exploration of the universe. The planets are arranged according to the order of the solar system.

Inspiration is found out that my friends including me everybody have such status, bound by ethics, family, social secular, was forced to abandon their own ideal, and in each of these people have and others is not the same problems, so everyone is lonely, through this social phenomenon to design the overall plot and scenes.

Rayyun render: The astronaut is nailed to a cross at the end of the film, very religious. What is the purpose of this design?

C 3: the cross represent the religion and ethics, the established habits, on some social rules and so on, these things are more or less all restrict the us, when hard bound us hand and foot, so just like Jesus was crucified hands, also represents the cross rules and pressure and final state, representing the astronauts completely dominated by life.

Ruiyun rendering: you major in visual communication, how do you view the relationship between two-dimensional creation and three-dimensional creation?

C: For me, two-dimensional works and planar works are more about refining, simplifying and expressing the content more directly. Three-dimensional works pursue more visual enjoyment, but also can convey more information. For the expression of a complete idea and unique emotion, the threshold of THREE-DIMENSIONAL may be lower than that of two-dimensional, but the technical threshold of three-dimensional is much higher than that of two-dimensional. My opinion.

Ruiyun rendering: how do you constantly improve your production technology and aesthetic level?

C 3: Try more, dare to magnify. When you have a picture in your head, do it and learn as you go. And then do more comparisons with the big guy’s work, so you can see where you are poor.

Aesthetic words need to see a variety of works, illustrations, films, books, photography can be.

Ruiyun Rendering: What art works inspire you most? Or which artist inspired you most?

C 3: For “Hoshino”, the biggest inspiration and picture atmosphere reference is actually the movie “Interstellar”.

The person who has the greatest influence on me is Anno Xiu Akira. I watched EVA for the first time when I was in junior high school, and then I would watch it again almost every year. Different people are different in age, understanding level and perception, so my original dream is to make a film that deviates from the stream of consciousness.

Renderbus cloud Rendering: Thanks for using Renderbus cloud rendering service, please share your experience with us.

C: First-class, the key is that I feel guaranteed. When I was rendering the last few scenes, I met the peak of rendering of the farm, and I waited in line for a long time, so the customer service suggested me to go to another farm, but I didn’t change at last, mainly because ruiyun’s quality and service are trustworthy to me. However, I heard that a few days after I finished rendering, Ruiyun added a number of machines, and should not encounter such a long queue in the future.

Rayon rendering: anything else you want to say to CG fans?
