At the end of 2020, CMMI Research Institute released the 2019 CMMI V2.0 Performance Report Summary, which was translated by Qucheng team and summarized as follows. (Download PDF version in English and Chinese at the end)

The report is divided into six sections: the purpose of the report, key information, 2019V2.0 results, CMMI users, V2.0 overview and target audience. It is explained in 86 PPT pages.

The information contained in the report is based on an analysis of the performance improvement results of 100 organizations that registered for the first CMMI V2.0 evaluation in 2019.

The evaluated organizations described their “before and after” goals for improvement in the CMMI V2.0 Performance Report (735 of the 95 evaluated organizations), with an impressive 79% success rate of meeting the improvement goals, and 20% of the improvement goals on track. 90% of the targets cover key areas such as quality, cost and schedule, and productivity.

Each result in the report is validated and implemented by an organization that has adopted the CMMI V2.0 evaluation, and performance improvements are independently reviewed by a certified CMMI evaluation team.

The purpose of this report is to help organizations: make changes, achieve understanding, present results, and establish a baseline. The purpose of a V2.0 performance report is to evaluate, gather, and validate performance results. The report’s target audience includes existing CMMI adopters, CMMI novices, organizations that are not focused on ratings, as well as CMMI partners and potential strategic partners.

The key messages of CMMI V2.0 are: exceeding performance expectations, value propositions, categories of improvement (including quality, productivity, cost, process cycle, schedule management, etc.), focusing on process compliance often leads to unexpected results, shifting to continuous performance improvement vs. process compliance, business performance model transformation, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The results and users section shows the application of CMMI, which has been adopted in India, the United States, China and Mexico, with most organizations adopting CMMI with fewer than 100 employees. CMMI is applicable to financial services, transportation, public services, telecommunications, business management and many other industries. In these industries that have adopted CMMI, nearly 70 percent of the targets have been met, and the remaining 20 percent are expected to be met after the review. In the category of performance improvement, improvements in quality, productivity, organizational finance, and schedule are the largest improvement categories.

The CMMI V2.0 overview officially interprets the key value drivers, including:

● Built-in performance capabilities to demonstrate the true value and ROI of implementing CMMI

● Built-in Agile and Scrum guides to demonstrate the impact of CMMI on today’s market

● Integrated product suite; New assessment methods to reduce the time, effort, cost and consistency of CMMI assessments

● Flexible implementation and improved availability make the CMMI easy to read, understand, and customize to suit specific organizational needs

The report concludes with a vision for CMMI V2.0, which will be released in 2021 to keep up with the latest industry needs: New Management Security and Security Capability domains, including three new practice domains covering areas such as network security and CMMC environment-specific information, as well as a new practice domain that enables virtual solution delivery practices (already published) and certification roles that contain best practices for virtual delivery by remote workers.
