In August, Amdocs, one of the world’s leaders in communications and media, acquired Openet. Here at VoltDB, we’re so happy and proud to hear it! For the past seven years, we have been the foundation data platform for Openet solutions.

While many vendors are still struggling to make 5G work, Openet has taken a bold step to build demand for 5G, and has tapped into revenue through new business acquisitions.

Uncompromising 5G

“We look forward to combining the technological strengths of Openet and Amdocs to create new opportunities for service providers during this exciting era of 5G adoption,” Joe Hogan, Openet founder and CTO, said in a news release announcing the partnership. With that in mind, here’s our summary of the technological advantages Amdocs will gain with the Openet acquisition:

1. Modern, native cloud platform

The Openet platform is built from scratch and leverages technologies such as containerization to provide customers with an “out of the box” experience and a faster path to 5G transition. Many traditional vendors are trying to adapt to the new competitive landscape by simply moving existing applications and associated data to the cloud. In contrast, Openet has designed and built a new platform to meet today’s demands for fast response, flexibility, fault tolerance, virtualization, and elastic scaling.

2. Accurate, real-time decision-making

Amdocs’ acquisition of Openet signals their acceptance of 5G, which brings new revenue growth beyond traditional markets. Capturing these market opportunities will require taking advantage of 5G’s near-zero-latency data transmission features without compromising data accuracy. With VoltDB’s support, Openet apps can meet the full spectrum of 5G requirements: ultra-low latency, predictable scalability, cloud-native architecture, intelligence, data consistency.

3. Integration of network and IT facilities

There are many opinions and articles online analyzing how 5G can make the leap from human intelligent terminal to device intelligent/semi-intelligent terminal. The number of these smart devices is huge compared to the absolute number of humans, they operate in milliseconds of latency and have no tolerance for interruptions or SLA violations. The iot market’s desire to extend current technology solutions to the device edge of the network clearly presents a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. Openet’s extensive experience in network monetization, billing and policy control enables them to address the increasingly complex iot market applications and design voltDB-powered product line that meets both 5G standards and the need for machine-to-machine connectivity to various external iot smart devices.

4. Agility and responsiveness

Openet realized early on that 5G would need to adopt a more agile and flexible microservices-oriented architecture (rather than monolithic application architecture) in its strategy and billing algorithms in order to accelerate the landing of new products, apis and platforms. Using the Openet platform and VoltDB as a base storage and decision engine, they are able to provide easily customizable template code to support a variety of applications and enable them to quickly respond to changing customer needs.

5. Cost control

Runaway costs have been a major factor behind the proliferation of new (often “free”) database products launched in recent years. However, a growing number of enterprises have now realized that with low upfront costs, they may soon face many new technical challenges, such as bloated hardware footprint and failure to meet core requirements such as low-latency event processing. Apps powered by VoltDB eliminate exorbitant licensing fees, don’t require expensive dedicated hardware, require significantly less maintenance, and use resources more efficiently.
