From hardware, chips, network, middleware to application services, all technologies will evolve to the edge, and Ali Cloud is the builder behind urban computing.” At the 5G Edge Computing Sub-forum on the first day of the 2019 Computing Conference, Yu Pengwu, vice President of Alibaba Group, delivered a keynote speech titled “Pioneering a New generation of IT Infrastructure and Application Innovation”, sharing the technical layout and future applications of edge computing.

Yu Pengwu said that in the 5G environment, the access capacity of wireless network has further jumped, and the production and consumption mode of data has changed from centralized production and decentralized consumption to decentralized production and ubiquitous consumption, which means the technology needs to carry out application reconstruction and industrial coordination. The three application scenarios of 5G, eMBB, mMTC and URLLC, are all intelligent application scenarios facing various fields of the city, in which 80% of the data and computing will take place at the edge. The edge computing as alibaba Cloud understands is not for the sake of computing, but to carry more new 5G application scenarios. It is a collection of urban computing including road computing, utility computing, consumption computing, security computing and family computing. With the profound accumulation of flying technology in the past 10 years and the strong alibaba digital economy, Ali Cloud is also gradually creating an open ecosystem of cloud-edge-end collaboration across e-commerce, logistics, finance, transportation, home entertainment and other scenes.

When it comes to urban computing technology layout, Yu Pengwu, said ali cloud has completed more than 30 domestic provinces, 300 + global coverage at the edge of the compute nodes, the next will be around the edges of the edge chip/equipment, computing platform (operating system), the edge of the city middleware, application and service of the four edge of the city layout edge technology stack. In terms of chips/equipment, Ali Cloud Edge computing adopts the “2+2+1” investment strategy, namely: 2 types of general chips (X86 and ARM) +2 types of dedicated chips (GPU and ASIC) +1 types of self-developed chips (Flat head NPU cloud edge and end integrated core ecology); In terms of edge computing platform, Ali Cloud provides three computing forms (virtual machine, container and function) and three delivery forms (Server, Server let and Server less). As for the edge middleware, Ali Cloud should change from the original “content distribution scheduling” to “computing scheduling”, and at the same time superimpose AI, storage and other new technologies to gradually form a unique middleware capability for urban application scenarios. As for the upper edge applications and services, it is necessary to combine alibaba Group’s business ecology and vertical industry partners to jointly promote technological progress.

“With the gradual maturity of AI, 5G, IoT and other new technologies, Ali Cloud will further integrate with its upstream and downstream partners in the industry from multiple dimensions such as standards, technologies, products and applications to find richer and multi-industry-oriented edge application scenarios and create more ‘close’ computing for customers.” At the end of his speech, Yu pengwu said.
