A few days ago, a friend of mine offered to leave, and I talked to him.

What was the reason for leaving, I asked him? He says his current job is boring and unfulfilling, so he wants to find a more challenging job.

I said, “Well done, AND I think highly of you. Besides, we don’t advocate 996. We do things with a good rhythm and plan, and the salary is ok. The environment in the first half of the year is so bad, and the profit of the business is good.

After hearing this, he raised his voice and rebuked me: “Is that good? This is called weight? Every day you tell me to plan, always talk about products, do not finish the function, fix the Bug, do not have a challenge of work, and then do the next must be destroyed here!”

I said: “……”

The bitterness seemed to run so deep that I had to stop myself and conclude the interview with a few compliments.

I have encountered this scenario many times since I was in management.

A few years ago, in a performance interview, one of my friends teased me in front of me about how busy and tired his current job was. He said that he had worked hard for five years, but I didn’t give him any promotion. He was so angry that he jumped ship and arrived at the new company full of confidence, but after a three-month probation period, he found that the new company’s evaluation of him was not so good. Not only did he do the same job as before, but his position was the same as before.

Unwilling to be lonely, he continued to choose job-hopping, but the result was the same for several consecutive times.

Perhaps it was because of something I had said before, or perhaps it was to relieve his depression, he approached me and asked me why.

I said it was all a result of a lack of willingness and ability to plan proactively and eventually being forced to grow.

How to understand?

At work, we often hear people complain: you see, I have worked here for ten years with my heart and soul. Unexpectedly, the boss of B not only refused to give me a raise, but also eliminated me? It’s so impersonal.

Why don’t you wonder why your boss wants to give you a raise if you’re still as competent as you were 10 years ago?

In my opinion, there are three reasons for this:

  • First, do not know how to set goals, day after day repetitive work, work more and more skilled, but slower and slower growth, and finally even lost the motivation of the goal
  • Second, you don’t know how many meals you eat, and you always set goals that are not commensurate with your ability
  • Third, the milk is the mother, where the money to do what line, finally lead to the accumulation of experience into ability

There are two common types of people these days:

The first is to work for a company for more than ten years, either as a junior manager, or with a lot of useless stock or options in hand, with no chance of promotion and fear of being laid off at any time.

The second type is “job-hopping hotshot”, who work for more than ten years and change N companies, and work for each company for less than two years on average. When they enter the company, they think everything is good, but when they leave, they think nothing is good. Finally, they become old and no one wants them anymore.

In my opinion, this is a sign of diminished personal value, and companies are rewarding you for your value to the company, either current actual value or future potential value.

High value, nature desperately to keep you, give you promotions, raises.

Value is low, have some of human kindness, give you than compensation, good close good come loose, have no what human kindness.

So how can we prevent this from happening? From passive growth to active growth?

Set milestones for yourself

My friend asked me, how can I integrate running into my blood and stick to it for a long time?

I said, when I first started sports, running 500 meters can not breathe, why? The cardiopulmonary function is too poor to sustain a 3-5km run. At that time, I was very frustrated. I felt that this kind of practice needs a foundation. If there is no foundation, it cannot be achieved, but it is too difficult to establish the foundation.

Just about to give up, a friend in the sports circle gave me an idea. Let me complete three phase goals before completing the 5km distance run:

First month: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, after 21 o ‘clock, run 30 minutes, run 200 meters, walk 200 meters, cycle, end when the time is up, no matter how much distance.

Second month: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, after 21 o ‘clock, run 30 minutes, run 400 meters, walk 200 meters, cycle in turn, end when the time is up, no matter how much distance.

Month 3: Monday to Friday, after 21:00, run for 40 minutes, run for 500 meters, walk for 100 meters, cycle in turn, end when the time is up, regardless of distance.

In this way, I persisted for half a year, and finally I ran 5’30 at 5km pace.

What do you mean by this experience? I would argue that the greatest value of goals is not in being achieved, but in being dismantled in stages based on existing capabilities.

When faced with a goal that is far beyond their current ability, most people will give up if they are not self-abusive, but it becomes easier to continue incrementally, by setting a step by step goal.

This is a goal-oriented practice that builds the willpower of the goal and allows you to run further.

Identify your ability upgrade path and destination

Recently, the “World of Warcraft” nostalgia suit was rebooted, and I couldn’t resist downloading one because the game was loaded with too many memories.

If you are a veteran player of World of Warcraft, you must remember the “talent tree”, which is very important for any class. Take the paladin for example, divided into “holy, protection, retribution” three specialization direction, players can according to the direction of the class needs, each level of skill points, add to the talent tree skills, character will become more and more powerful.

The same is true for work in the real world. If you want to upgrade your abilities in the workplace, you should first make clear the path and end point of upgrading your abilities, gradually light up the skills required, and finally make yourself stronger and stronger.

So, the path is clear, how to set the destination? Take paladins again.

  • If you prefer lower replicas, then you choose protection. Lower replicas can act as MT.
  • If you like PVP, then you choose retribution, high output, strong outburst, hit the other side called dad.
  • If you like to play a supporting role, then you choose holy (Milking), who stands out from the rest of the team, and must keep T’s health intact at all times.

Anyway, as long as you are not carrying essence, I believe there is always a suitable for you.

| do you know your weaknesses and strengths?

At the beginning of my career, I was full of “refuse to accept”. If anyone tells me that I am not good, I will take you to the bottom. As I got older and less energetic, I began to understand that no one is omnipotent. There are always people who are good at something and people who are not.

For those who are good at, you should put more energy, because it brings positive incentive to do so, let you can’t help on these things take time, unconsciously put into a lot of time in which, much to do, but it can also give you satisfaction, continuous time is long, you naturally do better than others.

And for those things that are not good at, do not hold back, you can rely on others to learn, consult, so as to make up for their inferior ability, at least to achieve the basic qualified level.

Take me for example, my speech ability is good, then I will attend more technical conferences, more practice, more watch, more study. In doing so, I would certainly fall behind the younger programmers on the front lines in terms of programming and understanding new technologies, but I could recharge my game by attending Codereviews, scenario reviews, and self-learning (like geek time), or at least stay in touch.

In addition, writing reading notes can also help me precipitate learning achievements.

Therefore, once you have a clear path and destination, you must be brave enough to face your weaknesses. Instead of spending time trying to fix your weaknesses, you should devote more time and energy to magnifying your strengths.

It’s a better investment.

In today’s world, there are too many temptations and knowledge is updated too fast. It is easy for us to find the direction and goal and feel confused in our hearts. As a result, we see some people with excellent resumes, who have either worked in this factory for more than ten years or worked in that team for many years, but their actual experience and ability are no different from those of people who have worked in one or two years.

Therefore, we should learn to reduce, learn to say no, learn to set their own goals, and set a series of stage schedules for themselves, in the process of continuous adjustment, correction.

Instead of thinking about changing jobs or getting a raise every day, try it tomorrow and you’ll be amazed.
