Mac is very popular abroad, especially among design /web development /IT people. It makes sense for ordinary users to like the Mac. After all, the Mac is beautiful, easy to use, and virus-free. So why do professionals love the Mac? From my personal experience, I think there are several reasons:

Mac OS X is based on Unix. This is so important, especially for developers, or at least for me, that it means a whole bunch of great tools for Unix are at your fingertips. If you’re a Windows developer, you might want to install a Cygwin environment on Windows? You don’t flex/yacc, grep, screen, SSH, make? Many Open Source projects only provide cygwin/ GCC /make compilation environments. The Mac is based on BSD Unix, all built in.

2. Development environment. C/c + + / Java/perl/python/ruby/PHP/lisp, various kinds of shell, to find, support directly, very convenient. If you want to develop C++ on Windows, you need to install the Visual Studio compiler. Or other C++ compilers; You want to develop Java, you need to download the Java SDK, maybe an Elipse or Netbean; You want to use Perl, you want to install a Perl interpreter, Active Perl? You need Python/PHP/Ruby, you need to install… ? Development programs require libraries, image processing, video processing, artificial intelligence, etc. Most libraries are Unix/Linux only. The Mac is based on Unix, so all of this works well with the Mac.

3. Editor Vi/Emac As a programmer /IT person, a good editor is very important, because you need an editor to write programs/change system configuration. I spend almost half of my time on Mac as Browser /email, and the other half as Vi.

4, no virus/Trojan horse. Having had a Mac for over 5 years and not seen a virus grow, I still don’t see the need for anti-virus software on the Mac.

5, do not need maintenance. Mac buy it and use it. Disk defragmentation? Don’t need. Drive? Once the Mac is installed, the driver is ready. Reinstall the system? I haven’t reinstalled it in 5 years (through several different Macs).

6. Simplicity. All operations on the Mac are minimal, with minimal user interference and increased programmer productivity. Switching wi-fi, for example, takes one mouse click on a Mac, multiple clicks on Windows (including some silly confirmation dialogs). For example, to uninstall the USB disk, Mac only needs one mouse click, Windows at least need to click the icon in the lower right corner, stop the device, confirm the dialog box and other multiple clicks.

7. Multi-window switching. This makes it easy to manage open programs/documents. I often have to switch between multiple virtual Windows, such as one window for browsing web/email and one window for writing programs/documents.

8. Programmer culture. Foreign programmers grew up in the Unix mainstream. Unlike in China, most programmers/developers in China started with DOS in the 1990s. With the expansion of Windows, a number of programmers using Microsoft tools have grown up. This explains why the Mac has grown so much since switching to Unix. The Unix-based Mac quickly gained the attention of a large group of older Unix hackers and new Web 2.0/Linux hackers, because these loyal fans influenced their networks, circles, blogs, and thus programmer culture as a whole. It’s kind of like Ruby on Rails, but it starts with a small group of people (elite people), and they start talking about it on blogs, at conferences, and so on, and it creates a buzz around Ruby in Web development.

9. Apple is cool. Each computer, each series is designed perfectly, from the packaging box, brochures, advertising, power cord, computer interior, computer appearance, computer software are carefully designed, unified style. Even tiny to screw, have you seen the screws on the Apple case, the data cable inside the case? That’s also design. Each Mac was labeled: Designed by Apple in California, not Desgined in USA. Apple is so cool, “We are a California company.” Apple’s secrecy has been extreme, with the product officially missing from the market until it’s released.

10. Entrepreneurship. Apple saga has attracted a large number of entrepreneurs in silicon valley, Apple/Google/Yahoo/Microsoft/Amazon/eBay represents the innovation, enterprising entrepreneurial spirit. It’s not a big reason, but it’s a small reason why the Mac is so popular abroad, especially in the United States, especially in Silicon Valley, especially in universities. According to the survey, Mac market share of American universities was the first in 2007. After graduation, these university elites went to work and society, and after a few years, some of them entered the middle and high level. How will they affect Mac?
