As a programmer always with no day and night of overtime package bundles, see because of life is not regular and high bump belly, touch because of pressure is too large and constantly fall off the hair, think of because of excessive overtime and gradually estranged wife and children…… Did a little bitterness come to my heart? It’s said that programmers love to work long hours. Not all programmers like to program long hours, but surely, with overtime becoming the norm in the industry, at least half of programmers have to like it, right?

I’ve also heard a few programmers say, “No, it’s not that, we just like cool technical work, and we don’t want to leave problems unresolved.” Another said, “Actually, working overtime is a good thing. It makes us great!”

In fact, our programmers have lost themselves in the high pressure, high load operation, they can complete the perfect man-machine dialogue, but the ability to get along with each other will be almost zero. They have no life of their own, their lives are full of endless code, endless bugs, endless functions, unable to do business……

To make it even more harsh and deep, many programmers work overtime not all of their time is spent solving problems, researching new technologies, coding to implement these things, and meeting deadlines, right? More often it’s to satisfy your boss or the company, but right now, I’m telling you, unless this manager is right next to you, chatting with you at 2 a.m., he won’t see the value of your overtime. Therefore, we call on programmers to reject irrational, endless overtime.

Let me tell you a story that a friend once told me. The story is about a genius programmer, let’s call him Xiao Li.

Xiao Li is a one in a million programmer superstar. He understands and writes code so well that he works 20 times more efficiently than anyone else. One day, the company got a big project with a short delivery date. The customer provided a frustratingly thick specification book. Xiao Li stepped in to help. He took the instructions home, and for three days no one heard from him. He came back to work looking gaunt, but he understood the entire manual and completed the basic framework of the project. Except for a few impossible parts of the specification, Li completed the rest, even the requirements that the customer did not understand. What a surprise! When I heard the story for the first time, I felt so deeply that I asked the first question, “Where is Xiao Li now?” ‘My friend replied –‘ He’s dead. Life is too hard! ‘

Perhaps programming karoshi is a better term. What is surprising about this story is that Xiao Li is only 30 years old. In fact, sudden programmer death often happens around programmers, but it is not taken seriously by the company’s top management. Instead, they sometimes get perverse pleasure from sharing deathmatch stories that are beyond human imagination. Even when programmers do this with a loathing, the loathing is tinged with pride, enticing their colleagues to do “better.”

I’m sure most programmers understand the need to put in a little extra effort every now and then and stay late at night for a day or two. But when the occasional becomes the regular, when the boss stops thanking programmers for their efforts regularly and becomes habitual, the programmer suffers.

When bosses take programmers’ overtime as normal or a matter of course, it’s not just a pity for certain programmers, it’s a pity for the entire industry. Human beings seem to have a resilience, and entire industries are shaped by years of tragic deaths from overwork, up to a point where they even reward it. Programmers continue to negatively exacerbate this trend every time they get into a long argument.

Recently, research on the loss of productivity caused by working more than 40 hours a week has shown a disturbing regularity. As programmers, if we are less creative, we make more mistakes, miss existing problems, and so on. Until you get to a point where you’re doing more wrong than right. When you spend a lot of time in the same activities, who cares about the programmer’s health? Poor Little Li won’t even live to be 40.

What’s more, the boss is not grateful for the programmer’s overwork at the cost of his health, and they will constantly threaten your status by bringing in people who are younger, more capable and more bearable than you. So, programmers, still feel overtime is really for granted? Are you getting the right amount and quality of sleep? So, call on all smart programmers to take a clear stand against a very bad and counterproductive industry trend — overtime!

We call on all programmers not to like the long hours of work, also do not unpaid overtime day and night, you should use this part of the time to experience life, accompany family, exercise!
