One man got a job at Reddit by writing a self-recommended blog post, then using social engineering to submit a Facebook AD to the CEO and get an interview. Two years ago, Chris Seline quit his job at a startup to look for new opportunities.
Instead of taking the traditional job search route, Chris decided to take a different approach, so he came up with a plan to write a self-promotion blog post that would attract the attention of a specific person in the company who would invite him to work there.
The company Chris wants to work for is Reddit.
The plan began. First of all, Chris knew that the CEO of Reddit was a tech founder, so Chris invested a lot in this self-promotion blog post to impress the CEO.
Now the question is, how do I get my posts to the CEO of Reddit?
C: My first idea was Email, but it’s just too boring. Find a way to get this post on the front page of Hacker News, and while Chris is sure the Reddit CEO still reads Hacker News regularly, it might not be interesting enough to get on the front page.
Then he remembered a common method used by startups — Facebook ads to get potential customers to see the company’s products. So Chris decided to make this self-promotion post his own product, targeting Reddit’s CEO with a Facebook AD.
The budget is very important!
Using the Reddit CEO’s Facebook profile, Chris used a bit of social engineering and careful observation to find out where he went and what he was interested in, and then narrowed it down. After all, the more people you reach, the more expensive it is to advertise… Chris doesn’t need everyone to click on it, just one person.
So he used that information to tailor tailored ads aimed directly at Reddit’s CEO. The AD went to 197 people, four of them clicked on it, one of them being the CEO of Reddit.
The total cost was $10.62. The strategy worked!
