Lately, I’ve noticed that whether it’s my blog or the tech column I write, I get a lot of comments from my friends. Besides technical questions, most of the comments are about career planning.

Such as:

I just graduated, how to enter the Java development industry? Having worked on Java development for several years, you feel stuck and don’t know what to do next. Do I still need to stick to technology?

There are many different questions, but they all boil down to one: What is the career path of a Java engineer?

I tried to answer your questions from all angles, including laying a solid foundation and learning other skills such as Python and big data. However, this answer may be a little weak, after all, I provide more tactical direction, i.e. specific methods of operation. But strategic direction, like a longer time line, five years, ten years how do you plan your career?

I think the best answer to that question is someone who’s been there, who’s been there, who’s been there, who’s qualified to talk about it.

As luck would have it, I had a group chat with a former colleague on wechat a few days ago, and he shared his own unique insight into his journey to Java architecture.

How he became a successful Java architect and even a company executive.

Instantly, I saw a bright light. Isn’t this the tonic that I, as well as my peers, need? Without further ado, please look down.

Before I share it with you, let me say a few words.

Although the work is different, the technical point is different, but we all have the same goal, that is to become the so-called winner in life.

What is important is that we need to pay attention to how he planned and went down the life course of nearly ten years. What can we learn from it? I hope that after you read his career experience, you may be able to help your current career planning, life has enlightenment. The story, must start from the beginning, that is wonderful.

Untrained Java architect — Wang Xian

Wang Xian, 1989, 8 years of work, a front-line Internet architect P7

Speaking of Wang Xian, my first impression is that he talks very fast and well organized. Ordinary people need to talk for 60 minutes, but he can arrange you very clearly for 30 minutes at most.

For Wang xian, one of the least confident things in his life is his degree. He of junior college background, look for a job on this matter, do not have very big advantage. As a junior college background, Wang Xian every opportunity is hard-won.

Ten years before graduating from junior college, Wang Xian took a box and went to the Magic capital [Shanghai]. “Burned his Bridges and didn’t think about how to get back.” With his resume, Wang went to various Internet companies in Shanghai and finally joined a small Internet company that was looking for an Android engineer and became a junior Android engineer. [College computer major: BASIC C/C++/Java; little project experience]

To get this opportunity, Wang Xian is very cherish. So when faced with the requirement that “you develop an app, the company will not provide you with additional resources for the time being”, Wang Xian took the bull by the horns.

According to Wang Xian at that time, [At that time, when accepting this project, I was also determined to head for the head, thinking about how to develop this app every day.] For Wang Xian, this project is the first bucket of gold in his life after graduation. In order to make this project, Wang Xian browsed a lot of technical websites, learned and preliminarily understood a lot of technology related, and finally produced a good version. With such perseverance, it is worth our learning.

I still remember clearly the first time I met Wang Xian, he left a deep impression on me. We met at a technical exchange meeting in 2012, and we talked for a long time and a lot. We exchanged our technical insights and insights, and exchanged contact information at the time. Wang Xian is very forthright about his own mind road journey, look at my own, also have a deep experience.

We started working together in 2015, when I was going home after working overtime and received a phone call from Wang Xian. At that time, I didn’t think much about it [After all, Wang Xian is a good person who is willing to learn, work hard and work hard], so I said to him: “Recently we are recruiting people in Jinfu, you can have a try.” The interview process is still quite difficult, after all, degree and technology in there. Finally, I was lucky enough to get the offer from Jinfu.

In the new company, Wang Xian not only got in touch with some projects, but also gradually undertook some project communication work. Wang Xian knows that his technology is still not good, and there is still a lot to learn. He also knows that if he does not work hard and cannot keep up with his technology, he will be eliminated. So I worked overtime every night until THE last one left, and also found some spare time to learn architecture related technical points [purchased many architecture books and videos]. As the saying goes: “don’t three days, then sit up and take notice.” Less than a year time, Wang Xian technology improved a lot, as we all know, this is his own hard sweat, work overtime every day and night out.

“For me, if there is a secret to progress at work, it is to keep an inquisitive mind when working on projects, and to keep learning new technologies,” Wang said, summing up his experience of continuous progress at work.

In March of this year, Wang Xian left Jinfu and joined an Internet company with an annual salary of 500,000 yuan, rated P7. Start a new journey. Good technology, but also afraid of education?

conclusion

After reading the above experience, combine with my other personal experience. I think you can boil this down to three key words: learning, networking, and time. The three keywords, in order of importance, determine the path and method of advancement for an architect, and even for the average person.

1: Learning You may feel that the above experience, like a running account, seems to be nothing too brilliant. It’s just, you know, jump around, make connections, work for a great company. But, if you think about it, it’s not that simple. Dared ask:

  • Assuming he didn’t have any ink in his stomach, would he have gotten where he is today even if someone had recommended him?
  • Assuming no curiosity about the unknown, would he step out of his comfort zone and seek out new challenges?

Therefore, never tired of learning, is the cornerstone of success. No matter what industry you are in, don’t tell yourself that what you have learned is enough. There is always someone out there.

2: Contacts this need not say more, we all understand, know more friends. In the above story, there is no doubt that he entered a new company through the introduction of friends and acquaintances. So, the network of friends is so important. In other words, I can get in touch with anyone in a famous company through the friends I have now, and you’ll see, this is crazy, you can do this. Similarly, behind the network, there is another topic hidden, which is the so-called emotional intelligence. From a networking perspective, emotional intelligence is simply: how to be a person who does not annoy others. It’s only when people are not annoying and have a good conversation that they get to know each other at a deeper level, that they build connections, and eventually become colleagues or friends, that they have connections.

3: time

Here’s a formula that some of you may have seen.

It tells you that every day you make 0.01 progress from the day before, a very small improvement.

But over the course of a year, you’re 37.8 times better than you were a year ago.

What about ten years? What about twenty years? In fact, this is the power of time.

At the end

Finally, I would like to give you a sentence. I read it on a website:

Again ox X dream also can’t resist silly X like insist!

And don’t go.

I can’t help you succeed. That’s what brainwashing engineers do.

I do have a promotion channel that might help you achieve that 0.01 a day.
