On March 9, 2021, VMware released vSphere 7 Update 2. It is available for immediate download via VMware Customer Connect and vSphere Lifecycle Manager.

What is vSphere?

VSphere is the industry’s leading computing virtualization platformApplication modernizationThe first step. It uses nativeKubernetesRebuilt to enable customers to modernize the more than 70 million workloads running on vSphere today. Now, usevSphere with TanzuModern containerized applications can work with existing enterprise applications in a simple, unified manner.

About vSphere with Tanzu

Significantly increase the speed of using Kubernetes workloads on existing infrastructure.

Modernize workloads running on vSphere

Plug enterprise-class Kubernetes into your existing infrastructure in less than an hour.

The advantage of vSphere

Deliver a developer-ready infrastructure

Plug enterprise-class Kubernetes into existing infrastructure in an hour using the newly launched vSphere with Tanzu. Align DevOps with IT teams and simplify cloud environment operations.

Any extension

Offering industry-leading giant virtual machines designed for SAP HANA and Epic operational databases, among others. Expand the vSphere infrastructure to increase the number of supported hosts per cluster by 50%.

Simplify operations

Deliver AI/ML infrastructure using gpus. Simplify software upgrades, fixes, and firmware updates, and secure hybrid cloud infrastructures with native security.

New features in 7.0 U2

  • ESXi 7.0 Update 2 supports vSphere Quick Boot on the following servers:

    • Dell Inc.
      • PowerEdge M830
      • PowerEdge R830
    • HPE
      • ProLiant XL675d Gen10 Plus
    • Lenovo
      • ThinkSystem SR 635
      • ThinkSystem SR 655
  • ** Some ESXi configuration files become read-only: ** Since ESXi 7.0 Update 2, Previously stored in files /etc/keymap, /etc/vmware/welcome, /etc/sfcb/sfcb. CFG, /etc/vmware/snmp. XML, /etc/vmware/logfilters, /etc/vmsyslog.conf and The configuration in /etc/vmsyslog.conf.d/*.conf is now in the ConfigStore database. This configuration can only be modified by using ESXCLI commands, but cannot be modified by editing files. For more information, see VMware Knowledge Base articles 82637 and 82638.

  • ** Improved AMD Zen CPU performance: ** Ready-to-use optimizations in ESXi 7.0 Update 2 can increase AMD Zen CPU performance by up to 30% in various benchmarks. The updated ESXi scheduler leverages AMD NUMA architecture to make the most appropriate placement decisions for virtual machines and containers. AMD Zen CPU optimization allows for a larger number of virtual machine or container deployments to provide better performance.

  • ** Reduces computation and I/O latency and jitter for delay-sensitive workloads: ** In ESXi 7.0 Update 2, performance of delay-sensitive workloads (for example, in financial and telecom applications) is significantly improved due to I/O latency and jitter optimization. These optimizations reduce sources of interference and jitter to provide a consistent runtime environment. In ESXi 7.0 Update 2, you can also speed up interrupt delivery of pass-through devices.

  • ** Supports confidential vSphere Pod on master clusters in vSphere with Tanzu: ** Starting in vSphere 7.0 Update 2, you can run confidential vSphere Pods on master clusters in vSphere with Tanzu to encrypt and protect client operating system memory from Hypervisor access. Security vSphere Pod can be configured by adding Secure Encrypted Virtualization-Encrypted State (SEV-ES) as an additional security enhancement. For details, see Deploying Confidential vSphere Pod.

  • ** quick updates to vSphere Lifecycle Manager: ** Starting with vSphere 7.0 Update 2, you can mount virtual machines to memory and use Quick Boot to significantly reduce upgrade times, system downtime and maximize system Boot time. You can configure vSphere Lifecycle Manager as follows: When updating ESXi hosts, suspend VMS to memory instead of migrating VMS, powering off VMS, or attaching VMS to disks. For details, see Configuring vSphere Lifecycle Manager to Perform a Quick Upgrade.

  • ** Encrypt Fault Tolerance log traffic: ** Starting with vSphere 7.0 Update 2, it is possible to encrypt Fault Tolerance log traffic for increased security. VSphere Fault Tolerance periodically checks between the primary and secondary virtual machines so that it can quickly recover from the last successful checkpoint. Checkpoints contain virtual machine states that have changed since the last checkpoint. Encrypting log traffic prevents malicious access or network attacks.
