Twitter announced today that it has begun testing a new dialogue setting that will add a “Conversation Participant” option to the compose window, allowing users to choose who they want to allow to reply to.

Tweets with restricted responses will be flagged and the reply icon will be grayed out so that others will also know which tweets are unreplyable.

Users who cannot reply can view, retweet, and retweet with comments, even if the reply limits who they can choose to follow or refer to in the article.

Being able to engage and understand what’s going on is key to having a useful public conversation. So we’re looking at how we can improve these Settings so that people have more opportunities to participate in the discussion while still being in control of their own conversations.

Twitter said the feature is being rolled out to select users on iOS, Android and Twitter.com, and will be rolled out to all users once the test is complete.
