Since the establishment of the TUG community in July last year, a number of selfless sharing and willing to contribute to the content of the small partners, in order to recognize the quality of the content contributors, TUG community has two honors — TiDB MVA (Most Valuable Advocate) and TiDB MOA (Most Outstanding Advocate). Becoming an MVA requires three quality content contributions within a year; To become an MOA is to contribute at least 10 articles of quality technical content to the TUG community in one year, representing the highest honor of the TUG community. These contributors are recognized by the community as TiDB technology pioneers and technology leaders.

Since the establishment of TUG, Liu Chunlei from 58 Group and He Lei from 360 have become the first moAS in the world. Despite the impact of the epidemic this year, the two teachers continue to share high-quality content and fulfill the mission of “originality preaching, professionalism leading”. Today let’s take a look at how Teacher Liu Chunlei became a TUG MOA

What was the original reason for joining TUG?

I joined TUG community in the second half of 2019. My original intention is to learn TiDB and communicate and learn with more community partners, so as to better serve my own business.

What was the best thing you learned in TUG?

The biggest gain in TiDB is that I can not only learn a lot of knowledge about TiDB, but also get to know many like-minded partners.

What businesses are currently running on TiDB?

At present, the company’s TiDB database covers about 15 business lines, including local services, 58 real estate, financial companies, car business, TEG, user growth, commercial products and technology, 58 recruitment, information security, anjuke, etc. Including monitoring, reports, data warehouse, logs, housing, security data and so on.

What are the difficulties in TiDB selection and launch? How did you overcome it? Any memorable stories?

We are the early users of TiDB. At the beginning of the launch, it was difficult for us to have a large-scale reference for the use of TiDB. All of us had to explore the use of TiDB, such as what type of machine to choose, deployment mode, business suitable for running on TiDB, and how to deal with faults. With the gradual increase of the volume of business, the gradual deepening of learning knowledge, slowly have some experience, from meta-information construction, specification formulation, tool, automation, to the platform construction, slowly can be very good operation and maintenance use.

What impressed me most was that the TiKV machine we selected before was a physical machine mounted on a single disk with four partitions, which had poor CPU performance. Four INSTANCES of TiKV were deployed, leading to frequent downtime. At the most, 6 servers were down in a month.

Is there any specific numerical manifestation of the changes in the business after using TiDB, and what lessons can be learned for the industry as a whole?

TiDB was originally used to solve the pain points of MySQL, such as large tables, we migrated about 30T MySQL large table data to TiDB, many sub-tables merged into a single table. If the single table exceeds 100 million and the storage exceeds 100 GB, we recommend using TiDB database, which brings good business experience.

What kind of sharing did you do on TUG?

Most of the sharing is about the use of TiDB experience, such as how to do some standardized formulation, how to do some automated development, how to implement the platform and so on. There are also some peripheral components to share, such as how to use TiFlash, matters needing attention in use, and large-scale operation and maintenance experience.

My share is to make knowledge more simple to spread to everyone, more convenient for everyone to use the database. I hope TiDB can do better and make the community more prosperous.

What is the most iconic share?

The latest sharing is 58.com’s experience in large-scale TiDB operation and maintenance. Here we discuss how to automate part of Ansible encapsulation, TiUP encapsulation, CDB database platform call, as well as scaling, upgrading and other operations.

NewSQL represented by TiDB is gradually becoming the development direction of database. It is said that this era will produce the first batch of NewSQL experts. What do you think of this problem?

TiDB, as a typical representative of NewSQL, has been widely used in many companies and in many scenarios, and has cultivated a large number of NewSQL experts. If you want to work in database, it is recommended to learn TiDB, which can greatly improve your own value. In the next two years, I will continue to take MySQL database as the foundation, NewSQL as the development direction, and devote myself to learning, so as to return more business.

What are your expectations and suggestions for the future of TUG?

Hope TUG more and more strong, at the same time hope to hold more communication activities, such as the form of enterprise line is very good, let us those front-line users can go to each enterprise to really understand how they use TiDB, so that we can learn the use experience of each.

What would you like to say about being one of the first MOAs in the world?

It’s my great honor to be one of the first batch of TUG MOAS. Every year BEFORE, I would share some experience of using TiDB, and I hope everyone can share, so that TiDB can have a good sharing environment and more people can enjoy the convenience of using TiDB.

With the growth of TUG community, Teacher Liu Chunlei would like to send his message to the community:

I hope you can share in TUG and grow in TUG. Finally, I wish TUG can develop more and more strong, not only in China, but also in the world. I also hope TiDB database is more and more efficient, more and more stable, so that everyone can use more convenient and better.
