On September 22, Ali Cloud released the world’s first Cloud Defined Storage (CDS) product. As a locally deployed distributed storage product, Aliyun CDS has the same technical architecture as public cloud storage, enabling enterprise customers to deploy and use storage products consistent with public cloud locally.

Ali Cloud CDS is constructed based on The Distributed storage system “Pangu 2.0” of Ali Cloud. The maximum IOPS can reach 10 billion yuan, and the latency of cloud disks can be as low as 100 microseconds. It can support tens of Exabytes of storage scale, and a single bucket can support trillions of files. The minimum construction scale of ALIyun CDS is as low as 9 nodes, and the maximum can be expanded to 120,000 nodes, with almost unlimited horizontal expansion capacity. Thanks to the excellent scalability and compatibility of Pangu 2.0, Ali Cloud CDS supports “one cloud multi-core” and can provide consistent product functions and service capabilities on hardware platforms such as Intel, Haiguang, Kunpeng and Feiteng.

This is a major innovation for cloud vendors to break down online local boundaries and bring public cloud storage capabilities locally.

“This is a small step for cloud computing, but it could be a big step for the storage industry,” said Chen Qikun, senior product director of Alibaba cloud basic products.

Cloud defined storage is the trend and the future

With the popularity and large-scale application of cloud computing, enterprise customers’ functional requirements and usage of storage have changed significantly.

On the one hand, new service scenarios emerge one after another, and new applications bring diversified data and I/O loads. A common storage product cannot meet the requirements of different services at the same time.

On the other hand, cloud infrastructure inevitably requires resource sharing and multi-tenant isolation. How to meet the requirements of resource sharing while minimizing performance disturbance and ensuring user experience and data security poses new challenges for storage products.

Cloud-defined storage will be the answer to this challenge.

Chen Qikun said that different from the traditional “software-defined storage”, “cloud defined storage” is a service to define storage, a service upper-layer application, multi-tenant service sharing, service scale deployment and design of the product, is the real cloud era of storage.

Aliyun CDS comes by cloud

Alibaba Cloud storage bears the complicated business scenarios of millions of users on the public cloud, and has honed and accumulated the ability to serve diversified businesses in actual combat, which is more suitable for the data storage requirements of the cloud computing era. Aliyun CDS naturally inherits these product capabilities to help enterprises face the challenges of new business loads.

In addition to have consistent with public cloud product ability, ali cloud CDS native support for a variety of data types, application scenarios, multi-tenant architecture and the service ability, provide the tenant identity authentication and fine-grained resources utilization, sharing resources between supports both tenants, and do the resource isolation between the various services, to ensure the safety of the enterprise data.

Ali Cloud CDS also has the quality and stability of enterprise-class storage. Aliyun CDS has its own full-link data verification capability, which can not only discover and correct silent errors brought by hardware, but also avoid logical errors caused by inconsistent data at the software level. Based on the data accumulated in large-scale o&M of the public cloud, hardware and disk damage can be predicted in advance to reduce the risk of hardware failures. Aliyun CDS also provides complete same-city/remote DISASTER recovery capabilities to help users set up financial-level storage disaster recovery plans and ensure business continuity.

It is reported that Ali Cloud CDS will be officially launched on September 30, with ali Cloud proprietary version of the unified sale.

Three years ago, Ali Cloud into CDS strategic planning. Chen Qikun believes that the future of enterprise-level storage will be defined by cloud services, and “cloud defined storage” will soon lead the transformation of the whole traditional enterprise-level storage market.
