On September 21, 2016, WeChat released small program private beta, on November 3 to developers public beta, on January 9, 2017 WeChat small program officially open to C users. As an important part of Tencent’s ecosystem, the development wave of WeChat small program has swept the whole Internet circle, and it has realized the dream of application “at your hands” in a light application and high experience way. As of July 11, 2018, the number of small programs reached 1 million, with more than 1.5 million small program developers covering more than 200 industry segments and 200 million daily active users.
When WeChat applet was still in private beta, SegmentFault cooperated with Aifan to hold the first civil mini program hackathon in Guangzhou.

In July and August 2018, Baidu and Alipay also launched their own mini program platforms. Baidu mini program is mainly based on Baidu APP super content ecology, through Baidu’s flow capacity and AI ability to provide empowerment. After the official launch of Alipay small program to lock the positioning in the business and life service field, its mission is to let Alipay from a payment tool to provide a variety of services in the scene platform. In December 2018, the “WeChat small program Wegeek Hackathon” sponsored by WeChat and undertaken by SegmentFault was officially launched in Beijing.
