Google has apparently blocked Chrome’s The Great Suspender extension, with existing users now receiving a message saying it is “disabled due to The inclusion of malware.” It has also been removed from the Chrome Web Store and all links to it now point to the 404 page. Some people are worried about losing tags, but Reddit users have found a way to restore them (Mishaal Rahman from Xda-Developers).

Great Suspender is a very useful extension to keep the browser from taking up too much memory. The tool automatically suspends labels that have not been used for a while, replacing them with a blank gray screen. You can click to reload back to your original location. Since Chrome tends to take up a lot of computer memory, the extension is an easy way to make the browser run faster without actually forcing old tabs to close.

If you use the extension and want to get your tag, the steps are simple, but a little tedious. If the tabs are open, you can go to them and click to go to the URL bar. There will be a lot of texts like this:

chrome-extension://klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg/suspended.html#ttl=%22Dawn%22%20Dario%20Marianelli%20(Pride%20%26%20 Prejudice)%20Piano%20solo%20%26%20Tutorial%20-%20P.%20Barton%20-%20YouTube&pos=0&uri=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJX GLl_sEDUCopy the code

Above is the address of the page. Delete everything before the URI and press enter to restore the page.

Reddit user avatar_ENG also found that it was still possible to retrieve the tags by searching through Chrome history. Basically the same as the above process: ID klbibkeccnjlkjkiokjodocebajanakg search extension program, and then open the TAB and delete spam. It can be a vexing process, but it’s better than losing any work open.

Neither Google nor the extension’s developers immediately responded to requests for comment.
