On the afternoon of September 20th, in the special session of qiniuyun sub-forum held by Cloud Computing University, Xu Jing, director of Qiniuyun education industry, shared the content entitled “Live Streaming 3.0 Era, fission and Reconstruction of online education Industry”. Hello, everyone. My name is Xu Jing. As one of the earliest technical personnel in the live broadcasting industry, I have experienced various eras of live broadcasting.

Evolution of live video

Live video has gone through three eras. The earliest live broadcasts were actually television sets, broadcasting a standard definition signal, collectively known as live broadcasts. Many traditional media, such as BTV and CCTV before it, are the products of live broadcast 1.0 era. With the development of the Internet, live streaming entered the 2.0 era five or six years ago, which was marked by viewing and high-definition. At that time, many Internet startups emerged, such as Tencent Video, Youku, Tudou and IQiyi. They focused on hd and viewability of picture quality, but none of them had any interaction. In the late stage of 2.0, simple interaction gradually entered this market, such as rewards, likes and bullets in the process of live broadcast, which met the simple interaction needs of the post-90s. Over time, we found that all live streams were valuable when connected with interaction and communication. It is about social interaction and communication between people, so video gradually becomes a channel for sharing and expression.

At the same time, strong interaction means higher requirements for technology and lower latency.

The chart above is an analysis of data by the ITU-T International Union. The horizontal axis is time, in milliseconds, and the vertical axis is user experience. It is obvious that real-time communication cannot be completed if the delay exceeds 400ms, and user experience is affected if the delay exceeds 150ms.

What are the key technologies used to achieve latency below 150ms? Why wasn’t there such a low latency before 3.0? In the 1.0 and 2.0 era, RTMP was widely used in pursuit of high definition and accuracy, but TCP was ignored as a security protocol. The three-way handshake and retransmission policy ensured the quality while reducing the video transmission rate and increasing the delay. UDP reduces the delay, but does not have a retransmission policy and relies heavily on the network. As shown in the triangle below, TCP and UDP have their pros and cons. How can Reliable UDP be used to ensure data security while also taking advantage of ultra-low latency?

Trends in online education

The other thing that’s really important in the educational scene is the whiteboard. A teacher of traditional education once lamented that many things in the traditional classroom changed iteratively, but only one thing remained until now, and that was the blackboard (whiteboard). To illustrate the importance of whiteboards in educational Settings, whiteboards solve online communication problems. For example, a colleague explained to me the difference between MCU and SFU in WebRTC, and still had no idea what he was talking about after talking on the phone for more than ten minutes. Then we plugged into the whiteboard demo (above) and drew a few diagrams on the whiteboard. In just 2 minutes, I completely understood. This is the magic of the online education whiteboard, which makes online communication more efficient and modern education easier and more intuitive.

Another is the application of big data in intelligent education. Traditional teaching can only record the semester grades and follow the students into the files. However, the data in the AI teaching system are collected, and each student has a large amount of data to follow, such as how many classes he skipped in college, which subject has special advantages in which period, etc., will be recorded. This can reflect students’ learning history more effectively and make teaching archives more complete.
