On January 19, 2021, Mendix, which has been Gartner’s “leader” in the Magic Quadrant of Low Code Application Platforms and The Magic Quadrant of Multi-experience development platforms for two consecutive years, officially announced the introduction of its low code Rapid software development platform to the Chinese market.

Gartner’s magic Quadrant, which is well known in the field of enterprise software and technology, is almost an important endorsement of the strength of the globally recognized IT vendors, and the leaders who enter the upper right part of the magic Quadrant are the best vendors with comprehensive capabilities.

The topic of low code/no code has been hotly debated in the domestic development community for more than two years and is still controversial. The entry of Mendix may be an important information and reference for the low code market in China.

CSDN caught up with Naiming Liang, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Siemens Digital Industrial Software greater China (Siemens acquired Mendix in 2018 and retains the brand), to hear his strategy and perspective on Mendix’s entry into the Chinese market.

Comprehensive and mature product line, supported by Siemens Mindsphere

Founded in 2005 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Mendix is headquartered in Boston and employs more than 900 people.

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant leader is not a hollow title, Mendix offers a proven product in the low-code space.

According to Mendix, as the industry typically does for both non-professional and professional developers, Mendix’s offerings come in two parts. Mendix Studio is a development environment for non-professional developers, enabling business applications and non-IT people to create applications.

Professional developers can use the more advanced Studio Pro environment to build complex, large-scale enterprise applications, and can add custom components as needed, such as SAP-based secondary development.

The Mendix platform already has more than 1,000 common shared components, including external connectors, mobile applications, widgets, application modules, and more. In addition, The Mendix platform incorporates multiple key capabilities, Examples include the AI-enhanced development service Mendix Assist Performance Optimizer, the human Workflow modeler and engine Mendix Workflow Editor, integrated development Environment IDE, multi-cloud Kubernetes deployment, and more.

In addition, Mendix was acquired by Siemens and incorporated into Siemens Digital Industrial Software. Mendix is integrated with Siemens MindSphere Industrial Iot operating system and becomes an important software part of Siemens Cloud platform.

Siemens has long regarded China as one of the largest technology markets in the world, and Mendix+MindSphere will also help Mendix explore the manufacturing and industrial Internet market in China.

Access to key head customers, low code allows the enterprise to build an ecosystem faster

Although Mendix has just announced its entry into the Chinese market, in the past year and a half, Mendix has already accumulated some important head customers in China.

In the interview, Liang Naiming mentioned that after a six-month evaluation, the first IT factory in China began to adopt Mendix and piloted 18 applications. Now, nearly 100 applications have been implemented with Mendix, covering both international and domestic businesses.

Another Mendix client, Foxconn’s Yunzhihui Technology, also praised the “10-day recovery of Mendix investment”. There are also clients who want Mendix to introduce both Mendix and Mindsphere solutions.

In sharing his customer stories, Liang also mentioned another important and well-understood message. Low code is not just for single projects. Mendix is also being used for sizing and piloting enterprise application cluster development. Low code development lowers the threshold of development, and saic’s upstream and downstream suppliers will have easier access to SAIC’s digital system. Low code will help enterprises quickly establish and expand their own ecosphere.

In the recent discussion of low code, there is a phrase that might ease the anxiety of some professional developers. With the rapid increase in the demand and quantity of digital enterprises for applications, the expectations of various departments of enterprises for IT are rising rapidly, and the business demand is far faster than the IT capacity. On the other hand, the competitive advantages of the Internet and IT giants make IT difficult for enterprises to acquire excellent IT talents, and enterprises need more non-professional developers to participate in application development. So it’s not that developers are being “abandoned”, it’s that there aren’t enough of them.
