SuperEdge enters the CNCF sandbox

On September 14, 2021, SuperEdge, a cloud-native distributed edge container system, passed the evaluation of CNCF Technology Supervision Committee, the world’s top open source foundation, and officially became a CNCF sandbox project. The ownership of the code, documents, official website and other contents of the project will be officially transferred to CNCF Foundation for hosting. This not only means that SuperEdge has been accepted by the cloud native open source community, but also marks the project’s complete decoupling from all the commercial companies behind it, making it a significant step for native Kubernetes to land on the edge.

SuperEdge is a distributed edge cloud container management system based on native Kubernetes. Led by Tencent Cloud, it is an edge computing open source project jointly launched by Intel, VMware VMware, Huya, Cambrian, Meituan, Capital Online and many other manufacturers in December 2020. It aims to seamlessly extend Kubernetes’ powerful container management capabilities to edge computing and distributed resource management scenarios, enabling edge IoT, edge AI, edge intelligence industries, and promoting the landing of the Internet of Things and digitalization.

Edge computing is a link between the preceding and the following in cloud computing. Since the beginning of open source, SuperEdge project has united various types of enterprises from hardware manufacturers, edge application developers and edge application users to promote the development of SuperEdge and the establishment of edge standards in the way of open source governance. This time, the project will be donated to CNCF Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which ensures the neutrality of the project to the greatest extent, and is conducive to the global developers, technical community and partners to participate in the construction of edge, cooperate and win, and accelerate the landing of edge technology and the establishment of edge standards.

SuperEdge community and developers

In the 10 months since SuperEdge opened source, six stable ficolin-3 variants have been released, with more than 30 technical articles, attracted 30+ Ficolin-3, 590+ Github Star and 137 Fork, and more than 600 people have discussed or used SuperEdge. Here’s to ten great developers, without whom there would be no SuerEdge.

Welcome to use SuperEdge and participate in the development of SuperEdge, SuperEdge welcomes every user and developer to build edge ecology with us.

Tencent Cloud edge container products

SuperEdge comes from Tencent cloud Edge container product TKE Edge, which is a collection of its Edge capabilities. It is worth mentioning that since the opening of SuperEdge, Tencent Cloud has deleted the SuperEdge’s internal warehouse. Commercial products Public cloud TKE Edge and private TKE Edge all Edge capabilities development and issue fixes are available at Github github.com/superedge/s… Uniformly, without exception.

TKE Edge is the most important part of Tencent’s cloud Edge computing infrastructure. It connects Tencent cloud ECM, AIoT gateway, CDC, TStack, edge devices and other edge base IaaS downward, shielding the complexity of the underlying details, bearing various business scenarios such as Internet of Things, industrial cloud, CDN, AI, audio and video live broadcasting, cloud games, etc. It involves smart travel, smart city, smart retail, Internet of vehicles, cloud gaming, live video, AR/VR, healthcare, financial banking, industrial Internet and other industries.

Tencent cloud Internet of Things platform IECP uses SuperEdge to connect numerous edge devices for unified cloud control and operation. There are many landing scenes in the Internet of Things, device control and edge reasoning, and many excellent cloud edge solutions of Tencent Cloud are applied to the Internet of Things and edge devices.

WeMake, Tencent’s industrial Internet platform, delivers platform data to customers’ rooms through SuperEdge to meet their needs of data localization and low latency. At the same time, SuperEdge’s cloud management and control scheme has greatly improved the operation and maintenance efficiency and achieved significant cost reduction and efficiency increase for relevant manufacturing enterprises.

Privatized TKE Edge features have been integrated into TKE Enterprise, which is delivered and maintained professionally by Lynchback. A number of privatization projects have been launched in smart security, smart city, smart traffic, smart school police and edge AI.

Looking to the future

The cloud:

Based on in-depth communication and discussion with customers on edge containers, the edge computing team found that users not only have demands for edge nodes controlled by cloud, but also have strong demands for edge clusters controlled by cloud. In the analysis of the actual needs of users, the distributed cluster management project Clusternet was hatched from SuperEdge project. These two projects complement each other and greatly promote the construction of Tencent Cloud in the field of distributed data center and edge computing.

The edge:

SuperEdge recently launched cluster management, node management, remote o&M and other functions, aiming to enable users to complete the management and o&M of edge resources with a few operations. There is also a major feature coming soon, which will allow edge Pods and Services to access each other in the same way as Kubernetes in the center. Together with our partners, we have launched a solution that will be available to SuperEdge for many developers to try out.

On the side:

SuperEdge has already been able to deploy Edgex Foundry on edge Kubernetes clusters with one click, and will continue to abstract and integrate Edgex Foundry with more edge device platforms in the future, striving for more universal multi-platform edge device seamless access, providing users with simpler, more versatile, and more useful iot solutions.

In addition, SuperEdge will further cooperate with various industries in the future, continue to build edge infrastructure and enrich the edge landing scene. At the same time, it will further explore the content of edge system high availability, edge service grid, edge Serverless, application DISASTER recovery, improving system ease of use and other aspects, so as to provide users with more stable and useful edge solutions.

Finally, this SuperEdge entry into CNCF Sandbox is the first time that Tencent’s internal project enters into CNCF Cloud native Computing Foundation. From internal code opening to self-developed technology open source, and then to community participation and code contribution, Tencent has been firmly embracing open source.

At present, Tencent has opened more than 130 open source projects on GitHub, with a total Star of more than 370,000, making it one of the technology companies with the largest open source contribution in the world. This entry of SuperEdge into CNCF Sandbox is also an affirmation of Tencent and its developers. In the future, Tencent will continue to work deeply on the road of open source and build open source ecology together with global developers.
