On October 15, Tencent officially announced that it has donated its two open source projects — TencentOS Tiny, a lightweight Real-Time operating system for the Internet of Things, and TKEStack, an enterprise-level container orcheography engine (both to be renamed), to the Open Atom Foundation. In the future, these two projects will be incubated in the foundation. Through open governance, they will connect with a richer open source ecosystem and jointly build open source benchmarks in the field of cloud native and Internet of Things with developers at home and abroad.

It is understood that the Open Atom Open Source Foundation is a global non-profit public welfare organization dedicated to the open source industry. It is the first and currently the only foundation with the theme of open source in China.
Wang Juhong, vice chairman of Open Atom Foundation and Vice President of Tencent, said that open source has played an increasingly important role in the process of technological development and innovation, and Tencent is looking forward to working with the foundation and developers to promote open source technology and ecological openness, and create value with technology.
The two projects donated by Tencent respectively focus on the current most popular cloud native and Internet of Things technology. Since the announcement of open source, they have received a large number of developers’ attention and code contributions, and have been applied in many enterprises.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s Internet of Things industry planning in 2020 is planned to reach 1.5 trillion yuan, and massive low-power Internet of Things terminal nodes have become an important link at the bottom of the Internet of Things ecological chain. TencentOS Tiny is a real-time operating system that focuses on lightweight iot scenarios and solves the “critical link” of the cloud on iot devices, enabling iot developers to more easily use massive computing and storage resources in the cloud, as well as advanced AI and big data algorithm models.
Compared to similar technologies on the market, TencentOS Tiny is very competitive in resource usage, equipment cost, power consumption management, security and stability, and enables interconnection of iot terminal devices.
TencentOS Tiny was officially open source in September last year. Within a week, TencentOS Tiny was the second most popular open source project on Github, attracting a lot of attention in the industry. TKEStack, another donation project, is an enterprise-level container service platform opened by Tencent.

Container is one of the representative technologies of cloud native. As early as 2009, Tencent began to make efforts in the field of container technology, from Torca to Gaiastack to accumulate a lot of experience in the use of containers. With the development of Kubernetes community and the increasing demand for containers, Tencent began to provide container service TKE based on Kubernetes in the public cloud. Subsequently, Tencent integrated relevant experience and improvements to form TKEStack, a container private cloud solution, which was announced as open source at Tencent’s 2019Techo developer conference.

TKEStack integrating usability and expansibility, a blend of tencent for many years in the field of container technology accumulation and huge amounts of business experience, also has tencent innovation GPU virtualization technology, can provide scheduling for community and ecological ability strong, feature-rich, stable performance of container services, developers and users not only can be used directly as a business platform, You can further customize functionality in a cloud-native way.

The open Source Foundation is like the “connector” and “incubation pool” of open source projects, which will provide projects with richer resource connections and more standardized code governance, providing a steady stream of power for the healthy development of projects.

Can be expected, the two projects of the donation of tencent in open atoms under the operation of open source foundation, will attract more developers to participate in the project construction, and further reduce the underlying technology of the Internet of things and cloud native threshold, accelerate related applications research and development efficiency, establish industry standard, and inject new vitality for the domestic related industry development.
