While Beijing is developing rapidly, its population is also expanding rapidly. Migrants have been one of the main reasons for the rapid increase in Beijing’s population since the 1990s.

To this end, we analyzed the monthly income, gender, date of arrival and departure, education level and occupation of migrants who had left Beijing.

The occupational situation of migrant population in Beijing

If the occupational distribution of migrant population in Beijing is analyzed, it can be seen that the number of workers and agricultural workers is far lower than the average of each occupation.

Chart 1

Engaged in the tertiary industry of the floating population, and most of them are business people, such as brokers, soho/freelancers, etc.), clerks, and employees (such as company employees and general employees of administrative departments and institutions, etc.), distributed in business more (figure 1), with the change of industrial structure, such as actors, presenters, singers, professional and technical personnel engineers. There are fewer primary and secondary industries.

Income of different occupation, length of residence, education background

Considering the income, residence time and other factors of different occupations, Figure 2 shows the results obtained by mining association rules.

Chart 2

From the perspective of educational level, the data of different professions all have the rule result of master’s degree or above. The general education level is improving, and highly educated human resources will become a great power to promote urban development. In terms of income level, there is no rule with a monthly income of more than 15000 in the rule concentration of workers and farmers in the service industry, so it can be considered that the high-income group in this occupation is still a small part. Professional and technical personnel and leading cadres all have the rule result that their monthly income exceeds 20000, such as {master degree or above}=> {monthly income >25000}, {living time 5 ~6 years}=> {monthly income >25000}, etc.

Differences in length of residence by gender

Figure 3 shows the difference between genders when considering the length of time they have lived in Beijing.

Chart 3

We can see the gender structure of migrants in Beijing. In general, the proportion of males is larger, and the proportion of females living for 3-5 years and 1-2 years is higher than that of males. In recent years, the proportion of females is gradually increasing, but the total number of females (45%) is still lower than that of males (51%). We believe that this phenomenon is inseparable from the development of Beijing. From the occupational point of view, the proportion of men is higher because men are generally in better physical condition than women, especially in manual labor jobs. This year, with the development of science and technology in Beijing and the change of industrial structure, the proportion of service industry has increased.
