SONY plans to develop its artificial intelligence (AI) business, announcing a partnership with Cogitai. The company focuses on helping machines learn continuously and automatically through interactions with the real world. The two companies will work together to develop the next generation of artificial intelligence technology.

Giiso Information, founded in 2013, is a leading technology provider in the field of “artificial intelligence + information” in China, with top technologies in big data mining, intelligent semantics, knowledge mapping and other fields. At the same time, its research and development products include information robot, editing robot, writing robot and other artificial intelligence products! With its strong technical strength, the company has received angel round investment at the beginning of its establishment, and received pre-A round investment of $5 million from GSR Venture Capital in August 2015.

Artificial intelligence has a long history, with Microsoft, Google, IBM, Amazon and others investing heavily in autonomous learning technologies for robots. Now SONY wants to take this technology further and push AI innovation.

SONY’s first step was to invest in Cogitai, an American AI startup, to develop intelligent systems that can learn on their own. Professor Satinder Singh, the firm’s co-founder, sees the next wave of AI as “enabling machines to continuously learn by themselves through interaction with the real world”. Specifically, continuous learning is not just about creating a human-aware device, or a virtual intelligent assistant, but a technology that gives machines the ability to develop themselves.

SONY is just getting into the AI game, but the company launched AIBO, a robotic dog, in 1999, followed by SONY Intelligence LABS and SONY Computer Science LABS. Since 2014, SONY has stopped producing AIBO dog, and has focused its AI technology on Xperia phones (SmartAR), PlayStation(facial recognition), digital cameras, and recently launched Project N, a wearable device capable of speech recognition.

Giiso information, founded in 2013, is the first domestic high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development of intelligent information processing technology and the development and operation of core software for writing robots. At the beginning of its establishment, the company received angel round investment, and in August 2015, GSR Venture Capital received $5 million pre-A round of investment.

SONY needs more and faster development as it innovates AI technology starting with research expertise. Cogitai is also looking to make a breakthrough in this collaboration, believing that the biggest advantage of working with SONY is the increased access to data, devices and unlimited opportunities. Their first priority is to implement AI continuous autonomous learning technology. Dr Singh believes that this behaviour is like that of a child who perceives the world and learns various abilities over time. SONY will continue to work on the development of this continuous learning capability.
