As expected, due to the strong industry users, various customization requirements are coming. Therefore, the question of project or product comes back. In the case of limited R&D resources, should we first deal with the requirements of project customization or continue to improve the product? In fact, the essence of research and development resources investment choice. So you have these thoughts. Write them down.

What’s the problem?

The system has just taken shape. There are two large projects based on the system, but both of them have some core needs to be satisfied. How should the r&d priority be set at this time? Let’s start with what are our options?

  1. No matter what the project, I am who I am, continue to invest in the development of the system.
  2. The research and development of the system will be suspended first, and the customized requirements will be prioritized to promote the project as soon as possible.
  3. Both hands must be hard, neither can be dropped, push together.

In fact, these choices may be correct, the key is the environment and stage of the organization or team.

  • If you have a sponsor to support you without having to deal with the problem of survival, that is certainly the first way is a good choice.
  • If you are in urgent need of funds to solve financial problems, facilitating the project as soon as possible to obtain the cash flow is your first choice, naturally the second way is the first.
  • If you’re confident that you have the resources for research and development, then the third option is a natural choice.

What exactly is the problem?

If the question is so simple, what on earth is there to think about or fret about? In fact, the above conclusion ignores an important condition that both the internal environment and the external environment can change. So if your direction or platform prospects are really attractive, then both external and internal resources are likely to be drawn in, and your resource problems may be solved. That is why pigs can fly if they stand in the wind. So the product-versus-project dilemma doesn’t exist. The key is to create positive feedback and get the snowball rolling.

Then the problem comes to how to form positive feedback. My personal understanding is to continuously expand the influence of the product or team, and create hot spots and flashpoints when the key results are achieved.

Problem analysis

  1. The vision of our team this year is to really make a product, so the product line should continue to go no matter what, can not make the system in hand into a project again, now the goal is clear.
  2. There are many uncertain factors in the environment, including the market environment and the internal environment of the organization. We can only communicate and observe this more. The other is to use opportunities to expand influence, attract internal and external forces, and seek the support of key resources.
  3. The third problem is relatively settled. According to the current capabilities and tools, it is necessary to form a product line to better solve this problem. Moreover, the problem brought by the product line is that the cost of research and development will rise rapidly, so the development of customized requirements will not be carried out immediately for the time being.

My current idea is to give priority to the key features required by the project, then use the model of product baseline + independent customized service to realize the project, use the product to win additional resources, and use resources to realize the customized project.
