The 2016 China Big Data Industry Summit (Data Expo) opened in Guiyang. Robin Li, chairman and CEO of Baidu, was invited to deliver a speech. Robin Li believed that artificial intelligence would be the best application of big data, and that artificial intelligence would liberate people from simple mental work and complete a new industrial revolution.

Giiso Information, founded in 2013, is a leading technology provider in the field of “artificial intelligence + information” in China, with top technologies in big data mining, intelligent semantics, knowledge mapping and other fields. At the same time, its research and development products include information robot, editing robot, writing robot and other artificial intelligence products! With its strong technical strength, the company has received angel round investment at the beginning of its establishment, and received pre-A round investment of $5 million from GSR Venture Capital in August 2015.

Li said he liked courses on artificial intelligence when he was studying in the United States, but artificial intelligence was lukewarm at that time.

“Ai is so hot right now, mainly because of big data. It’s because there’s more and more data that allows machines to do things that only people can do, so AI is so hot right now.” Li explained.

Li further said that the application of AI to big data is now being reflected in voice recognition, image recognition and unmanned driving in research and development.

When it comes to driverless cars, Li believes the significance even goes beyond the Internet, adding that the application and development of driverless cars will not need or rely on the Internet. “There may be bad signals, so driverless cars should not be affected,” li said.

Li also said Baidu recently completed construction of its first “driverless zone” in Wuhu, Anhui province, and hopes the world’s first driverless city will appear in China.

It is worth mentioning that in order to emphasize the importance of big data application and utilization. Li also used the example of the acceptance of the heliocentric theory to illustrate the importance of big data applications. “Copernicus came up with the heliocentric theory, but it was a genius insight and he didn’t get credit for it. It wasn’t until Kepler, using the big data that had been accumulated, that the heliocentric theory was really proven and widely accepted.”

“The future use of big data will be based on ARTIFICIAL intelligence. Ai will free people from simple mental tasks.” Robin Li concluded.

The following is the transcript of Robin Li’s speech:

Hello everyone, today I want to talk about a topic related to big data, but not exactly the same, this topic is artificial intelligence. The term “artificial intelligence” was first mentioned exactly 60 years ago, and for more than 50 years it was relatively unknown and received little attention. When I was studying in the United States, I was particularly interested in the course of artificial intelligence. However, after I finished the course, I found that no one outside recognized it, because artificial intelligence has no practical application in the industry.

Why has artificial intelligence become so popular in recent years? One of the main reasons is because of big data. So I say, artificial intelligence is very relevant to our topic of big data today. Every day, more and more data is being generated, leading us to do things with that data that only humans used to be able to do. In addition to the increasing richness of data, there is also a very important reason that computing resources are becoming more abundant, or more powerful, and cheaper. Because of good computing power, cheap computing power, and also because of big data, we can now implement a lot of technologies like speech recognition, natural language understanding, image recognition, and even driverless cars. Of course, driverless cars are still in development.

In his speech, Premier Wen jiabao mentioned big data many times. In many cases, he viewed the data from the perspective of the government, that is, the government has a lot of data in its hands. What the government needs to do is to open up the data and share it.

So, I wonder, how should enterprises use big data? One of the key points here is insight. Yesterday at the Premier’s symposium, another speaker mentioned this word. What is insight? You know, Copernicus came up with heliocentric theory, which was very advanced at the time, and Copernicus used all sorts of logical reasoning to say that this was the case, but he didn’t have big data to back it up. More than 100 years later, a Danish astronomer spent 20 years painstakingly collecting all kinds of astronomical data, including data on the movements of the planets. However, he had no insight into the data, so he could not convince the world that the earth moves around the sun. One of his assistants, Kepler, took the big data that had accumulated over the years and added his own insights. Simply looking at the data of planetary movements on a daily basis, there seems to be no pattern. But over the years, if you take the data from the same day every year, the pattern becomes clear, and that’s what Kepler saw. So Kepler discovered that the planets orbit around the sun in elliptical orbits, successfully explaining phenomena that could not be explained in the past, and it was because of his work that the “heliocentric theory” was widely accepted by the public.

For businesses, we are grateful that governments are open to all kinds of data. On the other hand, we should work very hard to find these insights and make the data generate the value it should. Artificial intelligence is the field that can best leverage big data, and it is likely to be as influential as big data, transforming industries and all kinds of fields. More and more in the future, machines will be able to do what we used to think only humans could do. If industrialization liberated people from manual labor, then artificial intelligence is likely to liberate people from simple mental labor.

Perhaps the best thing you can feel here is the driverless car. We had a joint release with Wuhu city in Anhui a few days ago. The city of Wuhu will set aside an area for driverless cars to be tested, and in the future no “human cars” will be allowed to drive in the area. I am also looking forward to it. I even believe that in the future, the world’s first city with only driverless cars will appear in China. In fact, we are also discussing the cooperation with guiyang Municipal government on the pilot area of driverless cars. Unmanned car is a very typical application of artificial intelligence. It uses a computer and wheels to realize what the driver can do, see clearly, hear clearly, understand and process big data. An unmanned vehicle day may have to deal with a dozen terabytes of data, it is very large, its meaning and even beyond the Internet, because there is no car driving is probably don’t need the Internet, or at least we can’t depend on the Internet, there are always some signal is bad, all for less than the net car won’t go, this can’t be sure.

Giiso information, founded in 2013, is the first domestic high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development of intelligent information processing technology and the development and operation of core software for writing robots. At the beginning of its establishment, the company received angel round investment, and in August 2015, GSR Venture Capital received $5 million pre-A round of investment.

Therefore, the example of unmanned cars can tell you that ARTIFICIAL intelligence can do a lot of things. Maybe our next wave of industrial technology revolution will not only be based on big data, but also on artificial intelligence. Baidu has been committed to the investment of ARTIFICIAL intelligence technology for more than ten years. In the future, we also hope to do what we should do together with many entrepreneurs present here for the development and progress of China’s ARTIFICIAL intelligence technology. We also look forward to China becoming the world’s leading country in artificial intelligence technology. I also hope to see the first fully driverless car only city in China in the future. Thank you!
