As the largest open source foundation in the world, Apache Software Foundation manages more than 200 million lines of code and oversees 339+ Apache projects. The report reviews the foundation’s major achievements for fiscal year 2020 and summarizes major projects and events.

Among them, Flink still holds several ranking records for Apache projects due to community participation and contribution:

  • Mailing List activity ranked first
  • GitHub is the second most visited site
  • Commits ranked second

Compared to FY 2019, Flink remained TOP 1 in activity on the mailing list, Commits increased from 3rd to 2nd in activity, and Github was the 2nd most visited activity in Apache.

Now in its 21st year, the Apache Software Foundation has grown from just 21 founders to highlight its “Apache Way.” According to the report, this community-driven approach to Apache has resulted in thousands of developer collaborations and hundreds of projects maturing. “Apache software is used in every internet-connected country on earth,” the report said.

In fiscal year 2020, the Apache Software Foundation achieved the following major achievements:

  • About 8 million lines of Apache code, worth about $600 million, were added; Total code worth more than $20 billion;
  • The Apache repository manages more than 227 million lines of code;
  • 34 new ASF individual members were elected, for a current total of 813;
  • Over 7,700 code submitters;
  • 206 top communities, overseeing over 339 Apache projects, and dozens of sub-projects and initiatives;
  • Nine newly graduated top programs;
  • The Apache Incubator currently has 45 projects under development;
  • Apache.org has more than 35 million page views per week;
  • The source code downloaded from the Apache image is about 2 petabytes;
  • The top five most active Apache projects are Kafka, Hadoop, Lucene, POI, and ZooKeeper.
  • The top five Apache projects are Camel, Flink, Beam, HBase and Lucene Solr.
  • The top five Apache projects by line of code are: NetBeans, OpenOffice, Flex (Combined), Mynewt (Combined), Trafodion;
  • 2,892 committers changed 60,132,710 lines of code in 174,889 commits;
  • 12,413 people created 63,172 new issues; 2,868 people closed 54,633 issues;
  • 19,396 authors sent 2,137,560 emails on 907,870 topics in 1,417 mailing lists;
  • Top 5 most active mailing lists: Flink, Tomcat, Royale, Beam, Lucene Solr;
  • 2,045 Git repositories, containing about 250GB of code and repository history;
  • Apache HTTP Server 25th anniversary (ASF 21st anniversary);
  • Signed 748 Individual Contributor License agreements (ICLA);
  • Signed 33 corporate contributor license agreements;
  • Signed 40 software licensing agreements; As well as
  • ASF has directed Google’s Summer of Code for 15 consecutive years.
