The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), an all-volunteer developer, manager, and incubator of more than 350 open source projects and initiatives, announced Apache® Echarts ™ as a Top Project (TLP) on January 26.

Apache Echarts is an intuitive, interactive, and powerful visual chart library that is ideal for business-grade chart presentations. The project originated from Baidu in 2013 and entered the Apache incubator in January 2018.

“It was a wise decision for us to incubate Echarts at the Apache Software Foundation,” said VP of Apache Echarts. “By learning and adopting Apache Way, our community has become healthier and more diverse, which has improved Echarts, Making it a more attractive and competitive choice for visualization professionals and hobbyists.”

Apache Echarts, written in JavaScript and based on the Zrender engine that supports Canvas and SVG, provides a series of dynamic and highly customizable chart types. Including line chart, column chart, scatter chart, pie chart, radar chart, K chart, instrument chart, funnel chart, heat chart, etc.

Features include:

  • Over 20 chart types as well as custom charts
  • Multidimensional data analysis and processing
  • Interactive components out of the box
  • Responsive design for multiple devices
  • Big data performance optimization
  • Server-side rendering
  • Through progressive rendering, real-time interaction of tens of millions of data is realized

And a variety of extended applications:

  • 3D visualization and other rich effects
  • Python, R, Julia, and other languages encapsulate visualization libraries based on Echarts
  • Adapt to a variety of platforms including WeChat small program, Baidu intelligent program

The project recently released the latest version of Echarts 5, which provides tens of millions of data rendering capabilities, It also supports Accessibility requirements that comply with the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative Accessible Rich Internet Applications Suite (WAI-ARIA) standard.

Building on the core features of Echarts, Echarts 5 makes it easier for developers to tell the story behind their data through 15 new features and improvements in the areas of animated narrative, optimized visual design, interactive experience, performance improvement, development experience, internationalization, accessibility, and more.

Companies such as Alibaba, Amazon, Baidu, Gitlab, Intel, and Tencent, as well as solutions such as Apache SuperSet data visualization software, use Apache Echarts to develop their visualization products. The project continues to grow in popularity, with more than 44,000 stars on GitHub and more than 250,000 weekly downloads on NPM to date.

“The world we live in today is driven by software and data,” said Erica Brescia, chief operating officer of GitHub. “With Apache Echarts, developers worldwide have access to a powerful, free, open source data visualization library. We’re happy to see the project thrive on GitHub. Congratulations to Apache Echarts for graduating as one of the Apache Software Foundation’s Top Projects.”

“Apache Echarts can help visualization experts and data analysts easily create a wide variety of visualizations, which are very helpful for us to analyze and explore the story behind the data.” “Said Chen Wei, a professor at Zhejiang University and an academic pioneer in visualization.

“We are pleased to witness the happy journey of Echarts in the Apache Incubator.” Baidu senior manager Zu Ming said. “Our community has grown with individuals from many countries and organizations who have contributed to bug fixes, problem solving and new feature implementations.”

“When the Apache SuperSet community researched the visualization library to rebuild the core visualization plug-in, Echarts stood out as the absolute best choice.” “It has an unparalleled variety of visualizations,” says Maxime Beauchemin, Apache SuperSet VP and original creator of both Apache Airflow and SuperSet. Rich and composable visual syntax, intuitive and well-designed APIs, a flexible and high-performance rendering engine, very lean dependencies, and an important set of protections that ASF provides when making a long-term commitment to an open source project.”

“It has been a pleasure to mentor the Echarts community through the Apache incubator,” said Dave Fisher, an ASF member and Apache Echarts incubation mentor. “They have embraced the Apache approach to community-led development, Encourage those who are interested in helping to improve Echarts to contribute and become part of its growing community.”

“This is an exciting time for the Echarts community,” added Xenzhe. “We are continuing to grow, and we welcome interested people to become our developers and maintainers.”

· Availability and oversight

Apache Echarts software is released under the Apache License V2.0 and is overseen by a team of self-selected active contributors. The Project Management Committee (PMC) directs the day-to-day operation of the project, including community development and product release. · About the Apache incubator

The Apache Incubator is the main entry point for projects and codebases that want to be part of the work of the Apache Software Foundation. All code donations from external organizations and existing external projects are brought to the ASF through the Incubator to 1) ensure that all donations comply with ASF legal standards; And 2) develop new communities that adhere to our guidelines. All newly accepted projects must be incubated until further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision-making processes have been stabilized in line with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status does not necessarily reflect code integrity or stability, it does indicate that the project has not yet been fully endorsed by the ASF.
