In the blink of an eye, 2020 is going to pass, the new 2021 is coming, is there a lot of friends ready to change a new computer? So in today’s article, I’m going to introduce you to some of the software I’ve just installed on my Mac, both free and paid, from the perspective of a Mac novice. I hope it will help you!

01. IShot (for M1)

174460

The software I used on Windows was Snipaste, and I was very pleased with its built-in window recognition, texturing, and color extraction capabilities.

But if I had to pick one drawback, it’s that it doesn’t add shadows to screenshots. When the captured area and background contrast are not obvious, the captured area and the white of the background blend together and feel a little awkward without borders or shadows.

On the Mac, there are more options for screenshots, so even though Snipaste is available for Mac (which I have installed), I’m willing to try out the new screenshots tool, iShot.

IShot, is a free screenshot software, support area screenshots, scrolling screenshots and recording screen, can meet the vast majority of screenshots.

IShot’s default screenshot shortcut is Option + A. Just like Snipaste, iShot can automatically identify the software window where the mouse is located without manually selecting the screenshot area.

Click confirm screenshot area, the iShot screenshot toolbar will pop up under the screenshot, including adding arrows, Mosaic, highlighting (to highlight the key content of the screenshot), mapping, and scrolling screenshot.

IShot will automatically add shadows around the screenshots, as shown below, so the screenshots with shadows stand out nicely from the white background.

Open iShot “preferences”, you can choose whether to enable the shadow and set the size of the shadow. In addition, iShot also supports recording video and GIF, use the shortcut key Option + W to open the recording window, “options” can adjust the recording format.

If you are recording a GIF, it is recommended to turn down the sharpness on the left before recording. Otherwise, the GIF will take up too much space.

02.XnConvert

176727

XnConvert is a free image batch processing tool for converting image formats, compressing images, adding filters, etc. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.

Using XnConvert as an example, click “Add File” or “Add Folder” below to add one or more images

After importing the image, switch to the Actions TAB and click Add Action – Image – Resize.

In the added Resize panel, switch the Pixels to the right of the width and height to percentage, and then lower the percentage of the width and height appropriately, for example, to 80%.

To complete the above Settings, click “Convert” in the lower right corner to compress the image. The compressed image will not overwrite the original image.

If you find it difficult to compress an image by changing the percentage, you can also use the built-in “presets” to quickly compress an image with “Keep scale” checked.

03.Rectangle (support M1)

172607

The Mac comes with the split-screen function. Move the mouse over the Maximize button in the upper left corner of the window. From the menu that pops up, select Collage Windows to the left/right side of the screen. The current window is docked to one side of the desktop, leaving the other half of the screen for you to choose which Windows you want to display side by side, much like the split screen on Windows.

But the Mac’s built-in split-screen feature doesn’t support shortcuts, requiring a mouse or trackpad for each action, or dividing the screen into three or more Windows.

To give the Mac split screen a Windows-like experience, we can use Rectangle, a free third-party window management tool.

Rectangle provides multiple shortcuts for split-screen operations. It may seem like a lot, but you don’t need to remember them all, just the usual ones.

The left and right split screen shortcut keys are ⌃ + ⌥ + left and right arrow keys, ⌃ corresponds to Ctrl key, ⌥ corresponds to Option key, and the corresponding relationship between symbols and keyboard may take some time to remember for those who are new to the Mac.

If your computer screen is large enough, you can divide the screen into four equally large Windows by using the corresponding shortcut keys: top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right.

In addition to using shortcut keys, click on the Rectangle icon in the menu bar, and select any option from the popup panel.

04.MindNode

155842

MindNode, an Apple-specific Mind Mapping app, is available in iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

The function and interface of the software are very simple. It organizes the content in the form of tree graph. When each node inputs the text content, it also supports adding emojis, which may make the mapping look less boring.

When you drag and hold the mouse to move a node, move it over another node, which makes it easy to change the ownership of the node and make editing more flexible.

MindNode syncs across devices via iCloud. When you edit a mind map on a Mac, it syncs to other Apple devices via iCloud, making it easy for you to continue editing or viewing content on other devices.
