We often hear people say, “If I had known this job was going to be like this, I would have……”

However, you don’t know what the job is like until you actually start working. So no matter how much you weigh the pros and cons before you start working, you can never be 100% sure of a new job.

If you just started a new job and it’s not what you thought was your dream job, don’t be discouraged. There’s a lot you can do to minimize the pain and change your work for the better.

1. Find out if it’s you or the job

For most people, change is hard. If you are slow to warm up and need some time to adjust to the new environment, give yourself a time to adjust to the new pace, new colleagues, new corporate culture…… Then judge the new job. Don’t say it’s not a good fit.

2. Find the core problem

If you’re still uncomfortable with your new job after you’ve passed the newbie phase, you’d better find out what you don’t like about your new job, write it down, and list it as clearly and objectively as possible. If it’s your new boss, look at what’s wrong with him. Is it his management style, attitude, abilities, or values? If it’s simply the new job that’s keeping you from staying, think about what you can do to improve your situation. Because the more you identify what’s making you unhappy, the more likely you are to improve your attitude toward a new job or to strengthen your belief in a new one.

3. Find some sparkle in your new job

Unless you’re financially independent, you probably don’t stroll into your boss’s office and say, “Well, thanks for the offer. I think I should leave my resignation letter here “and walk out of the office. No matter what your decision is, you have to be patient, so you’d better be patient for a while and see if the right moment comes.

And while you choose to do so, look for less annoying aspects of your new job. In addition to the dissatisfactions mentioned above, you may find some good things about the job. Identifying these positives will not only make you happier when you’re stuck in the short term, it may also help you understand what you love when you’re looking for your next position, which will give you a better chance of landing the job you want.

4. Jobs that are too short are best left off the resume

When looking for your next job, it’s okay to hide something. That said, if you don’t like your current job and are looking for a new one, don’t include it on your resume until you send it off. In particular, if you’re looking for your next job after the first week of employment, don’t show that experience when you apply for the new position.

While job-hopping may be less of a thorn in the side of employers’ eyes these days, a recent experience that lasted only two weeks is the kind of problem you probably want to avoid. It’s not always easy to be positive, professional and honest about why you left your job so quickly when it comes to why you moved so quickly.

5. Use your network to start your next job search

Sixty percent of job seekers find work through networking, and your next job could be one of them. Now is the time to reach out to these old colleagues, classmates, and friends and ask them out for coffee or connect with them on LinkedIn. There’s no telling which one of them will be the one who offers you the job.

6. You can choose to move forward

If you voluntarily quit your unsatisfying new job, returning to your old one might be an option. In fact, sometimes, you can take a step back. If you loved your old job, but you left it because you thought it was time to move on, a less-than-satisfying new job will give you a chance to rethink your decision and decide if you want to go back. This is a good way to ask your former boss if you can get your job back.
