I have been working in Tencent for two years since my internship. Today I would like to share a habit THAT I have been adhering to since I joined Tencent. It may be a little old-fashioned to say it out. This habit is to write daily newspaper.
Yes, every day before leaving work, I would use Typora software to record the work completed on my computer that day, and plan what to do the next day, which is kind of like writing a diary.
Why write a daily paper?
At first, it was just to record my work during the internship and help me become a regular intern. After all, I have a very poor memory, do not record the words of a few days to forget what they have done, in writing a formal defense PPT missed the work, it is not white to?
What does the daily paper say? Let me show you one that I wrote during my internship:
Let’s start with the plan for today. In addition to listing the things to do, I will also give each task an expected completion time. It is similar to the target breakdown mentioned earlier, which can help you better grasp the overall progress of the work.
When it comes to the actual work, keeping track of what you did and how long it took to complete the plan can help you review it later. For example, one day I planned to finish the local project setup in 1 hour, but it actually took 2.5 hours, SO I ended up in another document documenting the problems I encountered and thinking: If I were to do this again, how could I finish it in the expected time?
By keeping the record, I easily made the PPT of the defense and passed it successfully. Without the habit of writing daily papers, I might have to think through my head to sort out my work content, which would cost a lot of extra practical energy.
Therefore, after becoming a regular, I will record more contents in the daily newspaper, such as my thoughts in work, my harvest and inspiration, and my mentor’s teachings.
For example, some time ago, I invested a lot of energy in researching various technical implementation solutions of a certain system, but in the end, I did not come to a definite conclusion. After a cool analysis, it’s true that from a high-level perspective, I didn’t write any code during this period of time. So I have the following thoughts:
Make a note of this, and in my future work, I will be more result-oriented, adjust the amount of time I invest in unimportant things, and stop learning technology just for the sake of learning technology.
I have to say, writing daily newspapers really brings me great value. Therefore, even after I changed departments, my boss asked me to write a weekly report, but I always kept the habit of writing a daily paper, and then summarized the daily paper every week to refine valuable work, so that the weekly report could be completed easily.
Many students complain that their work efficiency is low, day after day, very confused. Try writing a daily paper. As you continue to review and plan, you’ll find that every day has something to look forward to, and every day has something to live for.
Everything is difficult in the beginning. When I first started writing a daily newspaper, I spent a lot of time, and sometimes I was lazy. But when you make it a habit, it only takes 2-3 minutes a day.
Don’t think writing a daily paper is a waste of time! In general, companies need to report their work before each performance evaluation and promotion. At such times, ALL I need to do is to take out my daily newspaper and have a full view of my work in the past two years. With the accumulation of daily things, why should I worry about having nothing to write about?
In the end, what I really insist on is planning and summarizing, and writing a daily paper is just one way. In addition to summarizing the work, I also summarize the technologies and platforms I’ve used, articles I’ve read, bugs I’ve written, and so on.
