In his keynote speech at the Mongodb. live global user conference in 2021, MongoDB announced the release of MongoDB 5.0 with native time series support, Serverless Database Preview in MongoDB Atlas, and Realm, the MongoDB end-to-end mobile Data solution for Atlasearch, Atlas Data Lake and MongoDB To continue to grow MongoDB’s industry-leading application data platform.

The latest generation database most wanted by developers
Only MongoDB gives developers that much freedom, from the multi-cloud clusters and serverless instances of Atlas to private and hybrid deployments hosted by Ops Manager 5.0 and Kubernetes. MongoDB 5.0 introduces a new approach for future applications, further enhancing privacy and security, and making it easier to support a wider range of workloads.
Significant new features include:
Native time series collections, clustered indexes, and windowing capabilities make it easier, faster, and less expensive to develop and run applications such as the Internet of Things and financial analytics, as well as to enrich enterprise data in a time-series manner.
Seamless data redistribution: Real-time resharding allows users to change the shard keys of a collection as needed as the workload grows and changes, without database outages or complex migrations.
Future-oriented application compatibility: Developers can now use versioned APIs to adapt their applications for the future. The application life cycle can be separated from the database life cycle, providing a level of investment protection that is superior to other databases. Developers can be assured that application code will continue to run without interruption for many years, even after low-level database upgrades and improvements are made.
Cloudy Privacy Control: MongoDB’s unique client-side Field Level Encryption (FLE) now brings some more robust data privacy control capabilities to cloud clusters. MongoDB 5.0 supports always-on auditing and certificate rotation, helping users maintain a tight security posture without interrupting their applications and being free to run applications anywhere.
Serverless Database Preview of MongoDB Atlas
With an easy-to-use serverless model, developers now have the high degree of flexibility and expressive power of an industry-leading document database. The serverless instance is now in the preview phase and supports the latest MongoDB features, so users don’t have to worry about backward compatibility and upgrades. Users simply select a cloud area to get started, and then begin developing using documents that the object maps directly to the code.

Other MongoDB enhancements
Atlassearch now includes functional scoring capabilities that allow users to apply mathematical formulas to fields in a document to influence their relevance, such as popularity or distance. Users can now also define sets of synonyms for specific search indexes. By correlating similar terms, users can respond to a wider range of user-initiated queries in the application.
MongodBrealm now supports the Unity game engine. Users can now use Realms to store game data, such as scores and player statistics, and automatically synchronize them across different devices. MongoDB is also investing in support for more cross-platform frameworks — the KotlinMultiPlatform and the Flutter/Dart SDKs, both of which are now available in Alpha.
Mongodbcharts is now integrated with Atlas Data Lake. Users can now easily visualize the wealth of data stored in Amazon AWS S3 without any data migration, replication, or transformation. By adding Atlas Data Lake to Charts as the Data source, users can gain deeper and more meaningful insights in real time.
