How to use heavy notes and special characters in Pages documents on the Mac? You can insert special characters into text, including mathematical symbols, stressed letters, arrows and emoticons, Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters, and more.

Add stress and other diacritics

1. When typing accented or other diacritical letters, press and hold the key on the keyboard to display the accented menu.

If the key does not have any possible diacritics, the menu will not be displayed.

2. On the menu, tap a character.

You can also hold down the number keys displayed for diacritics or use the arrow keys to cycle between diacritics, then press the space bar to select one of them.

If the character is language-specific, you may need to change the keyboard to that language to view it.

Enter special characters and symbols

You can use the Character Inspector to add special characters and symbols to text, such as mathematical symbols, Latin characters, and hieroglyphs.

1. Tap in the text where you want to place a character, then choose Edit > Emoticons and Symbols (or control-Command-space). Character Inspector appears at the location you click. If you want to keep the Character Inspector open at work, you can drag it to the desktop.

2. To find characters, do either of the following:

Scroll to see more characters, or click the button at the bottom to jump to a category.

Scroll up, then type in the search bar at the top (for example, type scores to see available scores, or Type a Unicode name or code).

Scroll up, then click the button in the upper right corner to open the full Character Inspector.

3. Click on a character to insert it into text.

If the entire Character Inspector is open on the desktop, you may need to concatenate the character.

Character Inspector is always open as it was when it was last closed. If the Character Inspector is expanded and you want it to appear in the pop-up view the next time you open it, click the button in the upper right corner to close the expanded view.

For more information about using character Inspector, click on the desktop to switch to Access, select Help > macOS Help (from the Help menu at the top of the screen), and search for Character Inspector.
