In the past 5 or 6 years, AS a judge, I have participated in a large number of promotion briefings (mainly front-end, including client and test), and also tutored many students inside and outside (100+) group, guiding them to write and improve PPT. In the process, I found that there were many common problems among all students. These problems led to some students who clearly had 80 points, but the judges thought they only had 60 points. While some students who have mastered the promotion skills can give the judges a feeling of more than 90 points with the same ability of 80 points.

Later, based on these common problems, I made a promotion debriefing PPT template, and integrated the attention points related to promotion debriefing, including debriefing preparation, content structure, expression skills, planning focus, etc., into this PPT template. Because the preparation of PPT is the core work of the promotion report, so the points need to pay attention to are integrated into the PPT, while writing PPT can be integrated together.

In this article, I will focus on the following points to talk about how to write a promotion presentation PPT, and also precipitation PPT template for free download. If you just want the PPT template, you can skip to the end of the article. Of course, I still hope you can spare some time to read this article, I believe there will be goods.

Promotion debriefing is a very big topic, this article will focus on the most prone to problems in the link and practical debriefing skills, and strive to have a harvest for everyone.

What should I prepare before the presentation

Top1: Understand the level competency model

The reason why I put this in Top1 is because I find that many students do not realize this at all.

Take an example that impressed me deeply. A few years ago, a friend participated in the promotion of T2.3. The company required T2.3 to be able to coordinate department resources, set goals and promote the implementation of the project. See the problem? Since you are going to be promoted to T2.3, you need to show the judges that you already have T2.3 skills and that your future plan is to match T3.1 skills. If your future goal is T2.3, you will not pass the T2.3 promotion.

I believe this friend must have read the company’s rank standards, and I also agree that it will be a great improvement for him to have the ability to promote projects within the department in the next year. But he may have just seen it, not understood it, so he doesn’t have one in mind when he writes his powerpoint.

The grade review requires you to demonstrate to the judges that you already possess T2.3 capability and that you have specific plans to move forward to T3.1. Therefore, it is very important to understand the ability model of each rank. Only by truly understanding the ability requirements of each rank can we better develop our strengths and avoid our weaknesses in the presentation and highlight the key points in the PPT.

Every company should have a capacity model table, here I send the description of our company’s front-end capacity model for your reference

Top2: Know the scope and focus of the judges

It’s important to know the range of judges in advance. Judges of different roles focus on different points, and your PPT content needs to be adjusted accordingly according to the judges’ concerns. To take an extreme example, if the judges are all backend and HR, and you focus on front-end details, the judges will not be able to judge your ability. Instead, you will fail because you have no time to show the key abilities that the judges care about.

For example, in the case of the front end, there are usually judges sitting below: senior expert, architect, front end team leader (partial management), technical leader (usually back end), HR, etc. Here’s what these roles focus on

  • Senior experts: focus on the implementation principle of technical solutions, advanced technology
  • Architect: Focus on how technical solutions compare to the industry, and how to scale within the company
  • Front end team leader: focus on management ability, focus on the ability to lead the team to achieve results
  • Technical leader: focus on the actual contribution of technology to the business, whether it is cost reduction and efficiency increase or quality improvement. Take data seriously and let it speak for itself
  • HR: Focus on personal soft qualities, such as cross-business coordination

These are just a few examples of how different roles have different concerns. In a word, the preparation of the content must be aligned with the judges’ concerns, so as to get twice the result with half the effort.

How to write the presentation PPT

Content requirements will vary slightly from company to company, but will generally consist of the following four modules

  1. Job description: Quickly let the judges know your job responsibilities and scope
  2. Key projects: Select at least two projects for in-depth explanation, which should reflect your technical ability and business value. Remember to choose projects that you really do and that reflect your unique value.
  3. Personal growth: I will talk about my growth and gains and losses in technical ability, business ability, soft quality and other aspects, and also introduce my personal precipitation and external sharing
  4. Personal planning: Plan for the next six months to one year based on business/team development

For a 15-minute presentation, the usual schedule is:

  • Job Description: 2 minutes
  • Key project: 9 minutes
  • Personal growth: 2 minutes
  • Personal planning: 2 minutes

Plan the internal capacity of each module according to the time ratio.

I have integrated skills such as how to write the content of each module, how to use the STAR rule, and when to display charts in PPT template, which you can download and check. Here is a screenshot of the PPT template on the page of the technical project case.

What kind of content appeals to the judges

The content structure of the presentation PPT is described above. In this part, what to write will make the judges’ eyes shine and they are willing to listen to your presentation attentively.

1. Ability to identify/define problems

Once you have a certain amount of work experience, you will find that in a company it is often more important to identify/define problems than to solve them. Because problem solving is essentially an execution process, with the right people and plenty of time, problems can always be solved. But identifying/defining a problem requires someone who can break out of the rut and ask new questions that make a difference to the team when others think that’s the case. Therefore, in the key projects of the presentation PPT, you must show your ability to find/define problems, so that the judges can feel that you are not only an executor, you bring changes to the team, you have their own unique value.

2. Innovative solutions

There is no more explanation for this part, just look at the title. The usual solution, the judges heard the calluses. But if the solution is unique, even a small innovation, the judges will light up and take heart. However, it should be noted that no matter how to create a new solution, you must also do a good job in the company/industry similar technology research, do not be behind closed doors, hi.

3. Change — change supported by data

The higher the level of reporting, the more likely it is that the judges may not be like you professionally. The question arises: What should I say? After years of summary, the core is a word change, if you want to be more specific, it is the change supported by data. Getting back to the bottom line, reporting is about showing your value to the judges, and bringing change to the company/team is the most direct manifestation of your value. Of course, since there is no need to explain the principle of change professionally (even if the judges can not understand), then the data is the most powerful support for change. It is difficult to obtain data, so we must pay attention to how to do data statistics before we do a project. For example, if you make a performance optimization, the change can be reflected in the first screen time of the page. But if you make a small improvement tool, then you may not have particularly good data to reflect the change, at this time need to be flexible, from a qualitative perspective to explain, such as reducing the process, shorten the joint investigation time, etc.

Report common problems in the job

I have sorted out the Top5 problems, you can check, if there is a change, encourage.

  • This is one of the most common problems you have. Reading from your script all the time makes the judges wonder if you wrote it yourself. It’s about showing up, telling people about your work, your awesome work. So don’t get stage fright, be confident. I’m the most powerful presence in the room right now.

Of course, this problem can not be solved by listening to a certain sentence. If you have this problem, try these two approaches:

    • Short term: memorize the manuscript. The more familiar it is, the more confident it will be.
    • Long-term: more participation in each demand review, technical review, team sharing, practice in daily work.
  • Ranked by: talk about your own planning, has nothing to do with the company/team of planning In the past the reporting on activities of PPT, often see some students write Node. Js, learn English, look at the language, learning to swim, when asked why they learn these things, the answer is usually more interested in, technology is no burden, broaden their horizons and to keep fit.

In fact, as a judge every time I encounter this kind of situation, my heart is quite contradictory. From the judges’ point of view, a purely personal project, why mention it during the presentation? The judges don’t care about your personal plans, they only care about what you contribute to the company and how you can contribute more in the future.

Therefore, in the personal growth and future planning part of the presentation PPT, be sure to write around the company/team’s goals, based on these goals, what is your personal plan, rather than your own life plan.

  • It’s not uncommon to have a technical argument with a judge. I’ve done it myself, and in hindsight it’s pretty bad. Promotion debriefing is not an occasion for debating questions. As debriefing, you only need to clearly state your own ideas, understand the questions as far as possible from the perspective of the judges, and make an answer. If the judge misunderstands your answer, give the judge more time to add to the question and avoid rushing back and forth.

  • Every team/individual has room for further improvement. If you only emphasize the good parts throughout your presentation, the judges will question you and lack consideration for your future development. Exposing problems is also a positive expression, asking a good question is also a kind of ability.

  • Making PPT is a painful thing for technicians, but no matter how simple it is, the whole PPT should be kept clean and tidy, so that the judges can feel your serious attitude. Uniform font, margin, size, color, alignment, bold, etc., to do these is a good technical report PPT.
