While writing for the Creative Market Blog, I spent a lot of time exploring what the next big trend in the industry would be. As a designer, you will often look to new podcast clips or blogs for inspiration for your projects. The resource industry is an important part of the development of the design profession, and designers are no exception. But where do we search for the latest and greatest resources, and most importantly, how do we make sure that the resources we find are actually relevant to popular trends? In this post, I’ll share some of my team’s favorite resources for tracking future design trends.

Let’s talk about trendy first.

Great design never goes out of style, and while most of us would agree, staying up to date on emerging trends can keep our opinions fresh and compelling today. Many people see “trendy design” as a red flag, and if you think so, rest assured: it’s not what you think. There is no contradiction between creating unique and creative works and combining creative approaches. It’s an important step to look at trends as introducing new tools to your Arsenal. Combination is a very important foundation in creation. As Einstein said to one of his colleagues, “combinatorial games seem to be an essential characteristic of innovative thinking”.

Bottom line: We’re not talking about creating “cool”, we’re talking about driving design innovation.

Start sharing dry stuff!

Knowledge of brand and print design trends

UnderConsideration’s Brand New has always been the favorite of designers, and there are good reasons for this. The Brand New column, written by Armin Vit, co-founder of UnderConsideration magazine, covers and reviews excellent Brand identity projects. The column has developed a very active designer community, and there are often some very interesting insights in the comments section. If you have been doing print design, then you can also pay attention to Art of the Menu, which is also a sub-section of UnderConsideration.

The Dieline is another classic resource for those who like to find inspiration in innovative packaging. The team looks at carefully designed brand packaging from around the world and details the rationale behind each project as well as the lessons learned. If you’re only interested in trends like paper, plastic, wood, or metal, you can filter packaging materials to find articles that fit you.

Check out trends in illustration and graphic design in general

Best of Behance showcases the latest creations from popular creative ensembles from around the world. You can filter by keyword (graphic design, photography, illustration, etc.) and then sort by “feature”. The result is that the Behance team creates a list of projects for you based on the time of the month, week, day, or no limit.

Dribbble’s Hot Shots of the Week is a special perspective on Dribbble, which lists the most popular uploads of the Week. Find the week you’re interested in and look at the games that have been viewed or reviewed a lot. Dribbble’s layout is simple, so you can focus on the color scheme and visual style. Some of them also appear in the Hot Shots section of their Weekly Replay series blog.

Abduzeedo’s Weekly Roundup and Daily Inspiration series have you listed as notable new creations. Their selection is diverse, ranging from 3D work to architectural art. In addition to subscribing to RSS feeds, you can now subscribe to their newsletter to get inspiration regularly.

Sidebar. IO lists 5 design-related links you need to see every day and presents them in a clean interface. You can also subscribe to their email and receive these feeds in your inbox.

Understand user experience design trends

Zurb founded Pattern Tap, a collection of user interaction models that inspire designers to make better designs. The Zurb team used it as part of their large library, and in their words “Pattern Tap has accumulated a wealth of tools and knowledge that will inspire and inspire designers around the world as an invaluable resource”.

UI Interactions of the Week is an inspirational weekly published on Muzli’s Medium Blog. You can download their Chrome extension so that every time you open a new TAB, they will promote noteworthy creative projects for you. Muzli joined InVision in 2016.

Discover emerging web design trends

At Httpster you’ll find inspirational page layouts, and some unique typographic designs. The site focuses more on the finer points of beauty, but it can also be helpful if you’re looking for a more polished design. Interestingly, it was born when two colleagues (@Guvnor and @DominicWhittle) discovered that inspirational links were being lost because there was no better way to capture them. Httpster is their better choice.

Siteinspire is another place to find innovative web layouts by designers from around the world. The content on this site has been compiled by Howell Studios. Select “New” and you can learn about new trends in web design.

Spotting typographic trends

Typewolf’s Favorite Sites of the Month series provides a detailed description of the typesetting of some popular websites. With Jeremiah Shoaf’s (@Typewolf Himself) keen eye, you can definitely find new ideas for your own work here. Interestingly, you can find inspiration in fonts, which can be useful when you’re imagining how a particular font will be used in text.

Understand trends in large, interdisciplinary design

Swissmiss’s The Friday Link Pack is a place to keep you inspired in different areas. Swissmiss is the wildly popular design blog founded by Tina Roth Eisenberg, who is also the genius behind Creative Mornings. If you consider yourself a design generalist, then you should definitely check out Tina’s tips – they come from the designer’s life and trivia for your weekend reading.

CO.DESIGN is more like a commercial publication that combines innovation, management, and DESIGN news. This site, edited by Fast Company, helps you understand how design decisions and business transformations coexist, why new innovative paths are emerging for certain companies, and how to learn from diverging creative fields. CO.DESIGN doesn’t tell you, for example, that 3D graphics are becoming a DESIGN trend, but it explains why Google is exploring this direction. Be sure to read it if you want to capture the broader design trends that have direct business implications.

Product Hunt’s Design Tools and Design Books pages provide you with some of the new, life-changing works. There’s a “Hot of the month” TAB at the top of the page to help you discover the latest and greatest. It also supports sorting by popularity, creation time, comments or likes.

By It’s Nice That’s The Best of The Web Series column contains all kinds of interesting links to help inspire designers in all fields. The column also has a section called Who to Follow, where the team recommends creative social media accounts to Follow.

The Creative Market blog is our number 16 resource. Our team is constantly looking for unique design ideas online, analyzing and sharing them with the creative community. Head over to my Trends area for our constantly updated inspiration summary and trend prediction round-up.

Plan, plan, plan

The sustainable development of oneself not only depends on the knowledge already mastered, but also needs to cultivate the skills yet to be mastered. Once a week or once a month, take a moment to look at the aesthetic styles that are permeating our lives and allow these fresh ideas to combine with your own thinking to shape a progressive innovation.
