Second brother, hello, I am your hardcore fan, I would like to ask you a question. I was hired in March 2019. I was a mess. I was assigned a code from a colleague who was leaving the company. Fortunately, I have been working in the company for one year and two months now. I want to talk to the leader about salary, but I don’t know how to start.

The above questions are very representative. I planned to write an article to reply to them, but it was delayed for nearly a month. I am really very sorry for the delay.

I procrastinate for two reasons. The first reason is that this question is really difficult to answer, because I have experienced only a few salary increases, and I have never been to a big factory, so my experience may not be universally applicable. The second reason is procrastination, hehe (tactical).

Then, let’s talk about my own only a few raises, I hope to give friends some reference.

I was a junior to go out to practice, at that time the salary 1200 yuan a month, come in together with more than 20 new people are this standard. It’s not a raise, but it’s a starting point.

A little background, which may not be clear to some new readers.

I’m a college student, there’s no shame in that, really. Some readers often write to me in private, saying, “Brother, I am a college student with poor academic background. What should I do if I am discriminated against after graduation?”

Low starting point, discrimination is normal, learn to accept. We are not born equal. All we have to do is respect ourselves. The network often meet some trolls, message spray my garbage, I replied to a sentence: “THE difference between me and you is that I am more and more powerful, and you, or that troll, just.”

After my sophomore year, I went to a software park in Suzhou for two months of training, and then joined a Japanese company (Jiangsu Fujitsu, if you know this company among your readers?). At that time, the software department had just been established and was in urgent need of fresh blood, and we, the cheap labor force, were just the target of exploitation.

After the internship, I went back to school to get my graduation certificate (along with my girlfriend for two months), and then officially started my job. But I can’t remember the exact salary at that time. Four or five thousand.

I have nothing to say about this raise, because having a job is good enough. Besides, the company is developing well. The project department keeps expanding. At the beginning, there were only one department, but when I returned to Luoyang, there were four departments.

The point is, there is no shortage of projects, the Japanese side is constantly providing projects, and most importantly, money. The company used to have a piece of land near Lvbao Square on Deng Wei Road, which was sold when the subway was being built, and then it bought several buildings in a district, the name of which I forget, it was quite remote at that time.

After graduation, my girlfriend went to Suzhou for a period of time. We rented a house in the downtown area. Every time I go to work, I have to walk for a while and take the company bus to work, which takes about an hour by car.

Because I am a college student, so this salary increase, than the undergraduate degree of colleagues less three or four hundred, specific figures between colleagues is not very convenient to disclose, anyway, it is really a little less, but the difference is not very ridiculous.

After a year on the job, I switched to a different project team and made Flex. Before I was basically a handyman, engaged in SQL, engaged in Ruby, engaged in Spring + Hibernate + Postgresql, basically where needed to plug.

Over the course of a year, I learned that Flex was going to be the focus of the company, so I privately researched the source code for the entire framework and wrote an internal chat tool for a few veteran colleagues to use to chat about World of Warcraft. I mentioned this in an earlier post.

(Do you, clever boy?)

It was just by virtue of this humble tool that I was recommended to my direct leadership by these senior colleagues, who said that I was a good material as a young man with skills and a flexible mind.

The newly established project team, including translation, seems to be 23 people, not a small team. I carry five rookie codes.

In this way for half a year, the leadership felt that my performance is impeccable, can really attack, take the initiative to look for me to raise salary. At that time, I was so excited that I told myself that I must have more points than the undergraduates who came together.

Then I casually said a number, I feel not less, the leadership also readily agreed without any words.

Turns out, I was fucking naive. It was too little. Several colleagues later revealed that I had asked for a similar amount. You missed a chance to make a difference, ma ‘am.

When it comes to asking for a raise, it’s best to know what’s going on inside the company. If you do perform well, try to figure out what the leadership line is and move it up a bit, especially if the leader comes to you and asks.

My second raise came at the end of 2013, a month before I left Suzhou. The salary increase was voluntarily given by the company because the previous contract expired.

I had a falling out with my previous boss and was transferred to another development department, so I was tempted to leave. In addition, my girlfriend had returned to Luoyang, and it was really time to say goodbye to Suzhou.

After I got my first bonus, I gave up my job. The company turned out to be a lot smarter than I was. The year-end bonus was spread out, and the second bonus was much bigger than the first. I obviously don’t get a second chance.

Before the Chinese New Year, the leadership finally approved my resignation application. After the formalities were completed and the provident fund was withdrawn, I returned to Luoyang — with sadness, after all, I had lived in Suzhou for three and a half years and had feelings.

The third salary increase was in March 2014, the second month after I returned to Luoyang. At that time, the internship salary was only 2500 yuan, which was unbearable. After a week of the second month, I couldn’t wait to apply for a full-time job.

The company is a training institution named Peking University Jade Bird, but I am not a lecturer, but an independent development department, which undertakes some government or personal projects.

The team was small, but MY strength was really strong, and I had a good relationship with the leaders and personnel, so the company gave me a full-time job. My salary increased by 2/3, and I paid five insurances and one housing fund. With the performance bonus, my monthly salary exceeded the average housing price in Luoyang at that time.

One of the most important reasons why I dare to raise my salary is that I have a unique performance in the team. I have no unsolvable problems in my work, and I can put forward constructive suggestions to the leaders. I get along very well with them.

I’m usually the first one to arrive at work every morning because I have the key to the office and I have to be early — I volunteered for it, of course.

(Do you, clever boy?)

Because I punch in with my fingerprint, I was praised once by hr at the monthly review meeting. Go to work early, go off work I also not to be outdone, the leadership what time walk I what time walk.

So, comprehensive work performance, people’s performance, the company does not give me a full-time ah said, right?

In summary, some advice for readers approaching 30. How to gracefully ask for a raise? The following three points must be done:

First, there’s really nothing to be said for your performance. You have to be able to fight what you need to fight. Force your boss to come to you for a raise, but the premise is that you must understand the company’s internal salary structure, do not ask for less, do not ask for too much.

Second, if it’s a small company, get closer to your boss, get closer to your co-workers, don’t stab them in the back. This raises raises the time, the leadership is not embarrassed.

Third, be thick-skinned, thick-skinned, thick-skinned, and say important things three times.
