Since Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot dog went on retail sale, it is unknown how many people have fallen in love with the expensive pet, which costs 530,000 yuan. Of course, except for a few big guys, due to economic strength, people can only watch from a distance…

Now we can make our own four-legged robot dog at a much better price. The Stanford Student Robotics Club recently welcomed the newest member of its family, Pupper, with parts that cost as little as $900.

Pupper can jump, trot and walk, and users use the gamepad to control its movement and destination. The raspberry PI inside the Pupper receives instructions and controls the movement of servomotors to get to the right place in the right way.

The jumps are also very light.

Last year, we told you about Pupper’s older brother, Doggo, another athletically gifted robot dog that costs around $3,000 to assemble.

Pupper, by contrast, is more affordable and simpler in design. Even high school students can DIY quadruped robots of their own interest.

In an interview, team member Nathan Kau noted that the robot dog weighs about 1.2 kilograms and looks “like a shoebox.” The dog would walk around the living room like a real pet dog.

The Pupper is set to programmable mode, and buyers can modify or extend the robot’s functions to suit their own preferences, including different gaits such as jumping and running, or advanced behaviors such as grabbing and chasing people. You can also simulate the movement of the real Pupper in PyBullet before operating it.

Pupper’s code is all open source, and design documents are freely available.

How do you get the robot dog if you have the money?

You need to buy some parts first, and if you already have a raspberry pie, you can subtract that from the cost.

Some parts need to be customized, including carbon fiber wiring parts, 3D-printed parts, distribution printed circuit boards and electric motors. The team has developed a detailed form for reference.

Stanford Student Robotics Club

The Stanford Student Robotics Club is an entirely student-run group. In addition to Pupper, they have also built the Rover Anakin Sandwalker and the four-legged robot Dog Doggo and Woofer. The code or design documents for these robots are open source.
