Just two weeks after the stable release of Linux kernel 5.13, the first Linux kernel 5.14 release candidate (RC) has been created. On July 11, Linus Torvalds released Linux 5.14-RC1, and its two-week window merge period has ended.

According to Linus Torvalds, Linux 5.14-RC1 is available for public testing. This release includes approximately 13K submissions from approximately 1650 developers, a big change in the hardware side of AMD’s GPU. In addition, legacy IDE code was removed with this release, and all IDE support is now based on Libata.

As with all new kernel releases, Linux 5.14 will bring driver updates to support more hardware devices. In addition, there are file system, architecture, networking, scheduling, virtual machine improvements, and of course documentation and tooling updates.

The final version of Linux kernel 5.14 should be released in late August or early September. As usual, this depends on how many release candidates there are throughout the development cycle.

For those of you who want to test this version, download Linux 5.14-RC1 at kernel.org. However, this is a pre-release and is not suitable for use on production machines.

“Overall, I don’t think there are any big surprises with this release,” said Linus Torvald. In terms of scale, this also seems like a pretty regular version. “We expect it to be a nice and quiet release cycle, but you can’t tell.”
