After the British newspaper The Daily Mail argued in April that Google was collecting more user data than Facebook, the Associated Press (AP) this week found that even when Google users turned off Location History, Some Google programs still store location data with time labels without user authorization.
The Associated Press notes that although Google allows users to turn off location logs and claims that the system will no longer store locations visited by the user and that devices associated with the account will also turn off the feature, this is not true.
According to ap tests, even when location logging is turned off, Google still stores snapshots of a user’s location and time when he or she turns on Google Maps, weather updates show an approximate location, and even location-independent searches show latitude and longitude. To completely deny Google access to user locations, however, you would have to turn off Web and Application activities.
Gunes Acar, a privacy expert working with the Associated Press, found that when he went out with an Android phone that turned off “location logging” and turned on “Web and app activity,” Google still records that he went to New York, visited The High Line Park, went to Chelsea Market, went to Hell’s Kitchen, visited Central Park and Harlem.
K. Shankari, a graduate student at Berkeley who had similar experience, said she was not opposed in principle to location tracking in the background, but that Google should have said so.
The Settings and instructions for “Web and app activity” appear unrelated to location, but it actually tracks and stores users’ location information, the Associated Press criticized.
Turning on location tracking could create a more personalized service for users and help Google target advertising. Both Settings allow the user to turn off or delete all stored data.
