Driverless technology startup Drive.ai announced on Monday that it will launch a driverless ride-hailing service in Frisco, Texas, in July.

Drive.ai said it will work with the Frisco Transportation Management Association, the local transport authority, to provide driverless transport services to more than 10,000 people in local retail, entertainment and office and business districts. The initial project will run for six months, with fixed pick-up and drop-off locations around HALL Park and The Star Avenue, with a future extension to Frisco Station. The project will be the first driverless car service in Texas to open to the public.

According to Drive.ai, the driverless service aims to solve the “last mile” problem of traffic, providing travel between distances that are “too far to walk, too close to Drive (or too crowded to find a parking space).”

According to the project roadmap provided by Drive.ai, there are six drop-off points for people to choose from. According to Drive.ai, once the program is launched, people will be able to call self-driving cars by installing a mobile app on their phones, in a similar way to ride-sharing services like Uber.

In the initial phase of the project, there will be a safety driver in the driver’s seat to monitor the vehicle’s movements, but Drive.ai says it plans to soon have a safety officer in the passenger seat to experience the driverless ride with passengers, and eventually to offer a passenger-only driverless ride.

Drive.ai says recognition will take precedence over aesthetics when it comes to body appearance. Each driverless drive. ai car has an orange color on its exterior, with the company Logo and the words “Driverless car.”

To solve the problem of driverless cars communicating with other human drivers on the road, Drive.ai’s driverless cars have LCD screens on the hood and on both sides that display current conditions, such as “waiting for you to cross the road” when they are waiting for pedestrians to cross the road.

Wang Tao, founder of Drive.ai, said Frisco, Texas, was chosen as the first choice for the driverless service because the state, local and municipal governments, as well as private partners, are very supportive of autonomous driving in Texas because of its sound laws and regulations.

“We hope the Frisco project will serve as a model,” Wang said. “We hope that the experience and data brought by this project will help us improve our algorithms and create a virtuous cycle of positive feedback.”

In March, an Uber test car struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, and over the weekend, one of Google’s Waymo’s self-driving vehicles was involved in a fatal crash. Wang tao said drive. ai will work to reduce traffic accidents and improve traffic safety.

Drive.ai was founded in 2015 with a team of 120 professionals from Stanford University’s artificial Intelligence Lab who develop full-stack level 4 autonomous driving technology, wang Tao said. It has its own core technology in sensor fusion, cognition, decision planning, positioning, offline simulation and other sub-modules. Drive.ai plans to expand to 170 people in the third quarter of this year.

Last year, Baidu’s former chief scientist and artificial intelligence expert Andrew Wu became drive. ai’s board member, and Mr. Wang said Mr. Wu has been actively involved in the company since joining, especially giving guidance on the company’s strategic direction.

“The driverless car is no longer an ARTIFICIAL intelligence technology of the future,” Ng wrote in an essay published on Medium on The same day. “It’s already here, and will soon make transportation cheaper and easier.”

Drive.ai has raised two rounds of funding totaling $77 million since its inception and currently has no plans for another round.
