One, foreword

Not long ago, I saw a “migration map of the world’s top 10,000 scholars (h-index scholars) around the world in the past 50 years” on Weibo (click to view the full video), so I decided to sort out some visualizations, infographics and other works I have seen, among which map visualizations are relatively less common. Which makes it all the more cool and impressive.

Two, throw brick

The earliest attention to visualization was due to the cool Baidu Spring Festival migration map. So thinking of using not contacted Baidu ECharts to draw the map visualization chart.

After obtaining the 1.38 million followers of Zhang Jiawei, the largest V of Zhihu, ECharts was used to simply plot the distribution of followers with “10,000 + followers” in China.

After that, Lin Shengbin, a family member of the nanny arson victim in Hangzhou, was taken. “My Wife and Children in Heaven”, a microblog that donated supplies to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake, used BDP personal version to map the dynamic thermal map of all the reposts from 2:43 PM on August 11, 2017 to 4 PM on August 13, 2017. Although it looks cool, it is not complicated to map.

Third, jade

In addition to the above two self-drawn charts, I have also seen some good map visualizations, so I will organize them.

3.1 Population distribution in China

The earliest work of Caixin Data Visualization Lab is The Nobel Prize of Starry Sky Painting, which was shortlisted for the 2014 Kantar Information Beauty — Data Visualization Design Award. Truly explain why “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

This will be covered in more detail in a subsequent article on the infographic, which will continue to focus on map visualizations. The team’s other works include charts of China’s population, such as the change in population distribution by province from 2000 to 2016, in the world Population Day: Population on the Move, Bread On the Far Side. Guangdong, Shandong, Henan, Sichuan and Jiangsu are among the most populous provinces. Guangdong had a permanent population of about 110 million at the end of the year. Hainan, Ningxia, Qinghai and Tibet all have populations below 10 million.”

“Comparing the population of permanent residents at the end of 2000 and 2016, the five provinces with the largest population growth rates are Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Xinjiang and Xizang, with increases of about 59 percent, 56 percent, 50 percent, 30 percent and 28 percent, respectively. The top three growth rates are all megacities (populations of more than 10 million) and municipalities.”

3.2 Museums in China 30000:1

At the end of 2015, China had about one museum for every 300,000 people. American museums are more popular than Chinese museums, but the proportion of free museums is lower than that in China.

“The number of Chinese museums is gradually decreasing from east to west, with themes centering on culture, folk customs and art. Museums related to the revolution of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, old sites, former residences, nationalities and memorials are common.”

3.3 Immigrants Go Far away

Emigrant to afar is still caixin’s data news and visualization work.

“The largest target destination for emigrants from The Chinese mainland is not the United States, but Hong Kong. In 2015, more than 2.3 million mainlanders moved to Hong Kong, while more than 270,000 Hong Kongers moved to live and work in the mainland. The U.S., South Korea, Canada and Japan are the next top destinations for Chinese emigration.

“Next to Hong Kong, the countries and regions with the largest number of immigrants to the Chinese mainland are South Korea, Brazil and the Philippines. China is not a country of immigration, and immigration here refers to people who have lived in mainland China for more than six months.”

“The world’s largest destination for immigrants is the United States, with an estimated 61 million immigrants living in the United States as of December 2015, or 19% of the world’s total, according to the Center for American Immigration Studies.”

In addition, you can also switch to the perspective of other countries, no further details, you can click on the original link to view.

3.4 Satellite images of global nighttime lights

NASA’s comprehensive nighttime light map of the world shows how humans light up the planet we live on.

Asia and Australia:

3.5 Mobike

Bike-sharing is nothing new, but its trajectory is still fascinating. In “One Seat: Hu Weiwei’s Worship of Bicycles”, Hu weiwei mentions the slogan “Light up a city with a bike” and shows the audience a visualization of mobike trips in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

In addition, seven months ago, Zhihu users made a DIY map of the 270,000 Mobikes they climbed in Shanghai at dawn.

3.6 Beijing commuting map

Finally, here’s a Baidu Map of Beijing’s commute to see how the morning and evening rush hours look in the Capital:

Four, summary

Due to space limitations, this article will first cover the map visualizations, more exciting ones will be presented in the next article, stay tuned. If you’ve seen another good one, you’re welcome to recommend it.
