The latest updates to I/O for Android and Google Play

Android 12 Beta

We released the first Beta of Android 12 during Google I/O. Android 12 brings the biggest design change in Android’s history. It also makes the whole system more expressive, and even makes the color palette truly personal. We’re unifying our software and hardware ecosystems under a single design language called Material You.

Widgets in Android 12 have been redesigned to make them more useful, attractive, and easily discoverable. We also added a dynamic color API to allow widgets to use system colors and feel more integrated with the system. We’ve prepared sample code for the widget, so you’re welcome to try it out.

Other updates include a new over-scroll stretch effect, improved system performance, and more privacy and security updates. Go to “Android 12 Beta Release” for more information.

Modern Android Development

Modern Android Development aims to help developers remove all the barriers that slow Development so that everyone can focus on creating the best possible experience.

One of the important things about JetPack is that it allows people to focus on writing features and reduce the amount of template code. The current Jetpack updates in the stable, Alpha, and Beta channels are available on the official website.

Jetpack Composer, a modern toolkit for building native UIs on Android, is currently in Beta and plans to release a stable version in July. Please read the official documentation to get ready for the 1.0 release.

Android Studio Arctic Fox (2020.3.1) is now in Beta, with new features focused on three themes:

  • Fast UI design
  • New devices that cover a variety of screen sizes
  • Increase developer productivity

Please go to the official website for more details about the new and improved functions.

Modern Android Development has another important pillar: Kotlin. Our recent survey shows that Kotlin is now the most commonly used development language for professional Android developers. Over 1.2 million apps in the Play Store use Kotlin, and 80% of the top 1,000 apps use Kotlin. We’ve prepared a set of tutorials for developing Android apps with Kotlin, which can be packaged and downloaded by clicking here.

Build applications for larger screen sizes

We have launched a unified platform built with Samsung that combines the best of Wear and Tizen with a new user experience. The audience will be much larger, and the same skills and tools that you used to develop apps on mobile will be available to build apps on new devices. There are a number of new APIs, such as Tiles, to help you build better Wear applications.

For foldable devices, tablets, and larger screens, we’ve updated many of the UI components in the JetPack and Material Design libraries to make it easier for people to adapt to a wide range of screen sizes.

Read Wear Updates and Foldable, Tablet, and Large Screen Updates for more details.

Google Play updates at a glance

Starting July 1, 2021, the service fee rate will be 15 percent for each developer on the first $1 million they earn annually from selling digital goods or services. Please read the official documentation for details.
