Originally priced at $399, order now and take home your self-driving car for $249!

Amazon’s Self-driving car DeepRacer is available, but you can’t ride in it. It’s a 1-to-18 scale model.

DeepRacer includes an Intel Atom processor, a 1080p camera, multiple USB ports and two hours of battery life.

It is only a semi-finished product. You can’t use it directly after you buy it. It needs to be “tweaked”.

With AWS

Far from being a pure hardware product, DeepRacer was developed by AWS, amazon’s cloud computing division, and unveiled at AWS Re: Invent, the annual conference.

Amazon aims to enable developers to master reinforcement learning (RL) through the development of autonomous vehicles, paired with the AWS platform.

Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning in which models are run in a trial-and-error manner in an interactive environment, learning increments through feedback to achieve a predetermined goal or maximize a certain type of score or reward.

Amazon wants developers to get some hands-on experience with reinforcement learning by tuning the DeeRacer car. Hardware is the vehicle; software is amazon’s focus.

AWS, after all, is amazon’s gold mine, generating $6.7 billion in revenue in the third quarter.

Microsoft, which is close behind in market share, recently opened source AirSim, a driverless car simulator, which should put pressure on Amazon.

Developers can now tap into AWS’s 3D cloud simulator to “tune” the cars.

Start by logging on to Amazon AWS DeepRacer to create your own reinforcement learning model.

The AWS RoboMaker platform provides a virtual track that allows you to constantly optimize functions and parameters to make laps as short as possible.

Submit your lap times in an online tournament, and once DeepRacer is available, you can load the app into your car and test it on the road.

Amazon S3 also provides model storage, and Amazon Kinesis Video Streams records Video Streams from emulators.

Use the AWS Family bucket anyway.

Amazon does the math for you: it costs $3.04 to train the model and $9.14 to further refine it.

Developers are given 10 hours of training and 60 simulation units for the first month of registration.

Directions for use

The DeepRacer car consists of a driving module and a computing module, which are powered separately and need to be charged separately.

You need to have:

A COMPUTER with A USB port and access to the Internet; A USB flash drive; Wi-fi wireless network; AWS account.

Preparations:

  1. Assemble the car and connect it to Wi-Fi;
  2. Obtain the IP address of the car;
  3. Upgrade software (if any);
  4. Enter your IP address in your browser to log in to the control panel.

Training car:

For autonomous vehicle, the agent in reinforcement learning is the vehicle with sensor, and the clearly marked driving track is the environment. Positive excitation is when the car stays on the track, negative excitation is when the car leaves the track.

The rewards feature takes an image recorded by the camera as input and generates a score based on the current location. A simple form of the reward function could be: the vehicle scores 0 if it is on the track, -1 if it is off the track, and +1 if it reaches the finish line.

With this bonus feature, vehicles are penalized for leaving the track and rewarded for arriving at their destination.

Let the car in the continuous training to get higher scores, so as to achieve the purpose of intensive learning.

Enable autopilot mode:

  1. Download the trained model from the AWS DeepRacer platform;
  2. Connect the DeepRacer car to your computer using a USB cable and place the Model files in the “Model” folder on the USB drive.
  3. Select “Autopilot Mode” in the control panel and import the downloaded model.
  4. Put the car on the runway, press the “start driving” button;
  5. The car starts running and displays a track picture on the computer.

Repeat the above steps to test different models.

You can even race cars

In an effort to drum up developer enthusiasm, Amazon announced it will host self-driving car leagues at AWS summits around the world.

Developers can participate in tournaments for honors and prizes. The top finishers in each summit venue will qualify for the final AWS Deep Pracer “Championship”.

Amazon says it will host the champions League finals and announce the winners at tomorrow’s Re: Invent conference.

Go ahead and try

If you’re interested in Amazon’s DeepRacer, you can preorder it now, but it won’t ship until March 6.
