Abstract: What are the advantages of Peng Lixun, chief architect of Huawei cloud database, as the QCon’s “Database and storage Technology” topic? How did he become a champion of MySQL? With these questions, Peng Lixun was interviewed.

This article is from the huawei cloud community “QCon feature producer, Huawei cloud database chief architect Peng Lixun interview”, the original author: Scheming fat.

May 29-31, 2021, Peng Lixun, chief architect of Huawei Cloud database, attended the QCon 2021 Global Software Development Conference. Different from the past, he had one more identity — QCon global Software Development Conference “Database and storage technology” topic presenter, and created a wonderful technology sharing event together with many big names in the field of database.

Peng Lixun, chief architect of Huawei Cloud database

Can serve as the QCon “database and storage technology” topic of the publisher, what is peng Lixun’s advantage? How did he become a champion of MySQL? With these questions in mind, we interviewed Peng Lixun.

I came into MySQL by chance and was inspired by the father of MySQL

Through the interview, we learned that Peng Lixun was not interested in MySQL database from the very beginning. He got into contact with MySQL by chance, and then studied by himself. He started as DBA (database administrator), then as DA (database architect), and then as kernel research and development and kernel architecture. Eventually, he became a giant in MySQL.

Peng lixun has a brilliant resume. He was awarded the Oracle ACE Director(For MySQL). There are currently only five ACED people in the MySQL space in the world). He is also very influential in community contribution. He is one of the few contributors to MySQL source code and actively participated in the initiation and establishment of ACMUG (MySQL China user group) as the vice president and organizer of the organization in Hangzhou. As the first Member of the MariaDB Foundation in Asia Pacific, he was the only member of the MariaDB submission team in China, and submitted multi-source Replication, Thread Memory Usage Monitor and other functional patches to the authorities. And actively promote the popularity of MySQL/MariaDB in China.

When it comes to MariaDB, Peng also shared his close relationship with Michael Widenius, also known as Monty, the founder and CTO of MariaDB, the father of MySQL. One day he received an email with the subject line from Monty, the father of MySQL. Monty had seen some of his open source patches on the Internet and hoped he would give him permission to merge into the trunk. “The idea for these patches was quite impressive, and several of them were quite talented,” says Monty. This is very encouraging for a new graduate who has worked for two years, and also strengthens Peng Lixun’s determination to continue in-depth work in the MySQL field.

Choose Huawei, and the giant peer innovation value

Before joining Huawei, Peng lixun worked in database for more than 10 years at large Internet companies and startups. In his opinion, database is a technology with huge investment and long cycle, which must be maintained for a long time to reap results. Huawei is a company that is very willing to invest in technology research and development, and has a strong R&D gene and customer service gene. On the one hand, Huawei attaches great importance to technological advancement and software quality. On the other hand, Huawei attaches great importance to the voice of customers and takes a strict attitude towards faults.

Peng Lixun believes that there are two trends in the development of database industry from a global perspective. One is that the proportion of open source database is getting higher and higher, while the proportion of commercial database is getting lower and lower. Another trend is the increasing proportion of database deployments in the cloud, of which the proportion of cloud native databases is rapidly increasing. From the perspective of the domestic market, in addition to the above two trends, the voice and development of domestic database has been unprecedented promotion, a large number of domestic database and domestic database companies have sprung up like mushrooms.

But we have to face a reality, is China’s database industry started relatively late, the industry has formed a DE facto industry standard, a great deal of mature commercial database and application system are binding, has also been the MySQL open source database, mature ecological cover, such as PG new ecological want mature need huge effort, Openness is the only way to succeed.

This coincides with the concept of ecological openness that Huawei cloud database adheres to. Therefore, he believes that Huawei has the confidence to do a good job in the database, so he chooses Huawei.

Persistent technology, to promote the original cloud industrial intelligent upgrade

According to Peng lixun, Huawei Cloud database adheres to the road of open ecology, and currently supports Huawei’s own openGauss and mainstream open source database ecology such as MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra and InfluxDB.

In terms of innovation, Huawei cloud database has implemented a set of GaussDB architectures with various products. SQL Layer provides different ecological compatibility (such as MySQL and MongoDB), and Index Layer provides different data organization modes (such as B-tree, documents, KV, etc.). StorageLayer Uses unified distributed storage DFVS across AZs. In this way, Huawei can independently evolve at each layer. On the one hand, it can be compatible with various open source ecosystems. On the other hand, Huawei can also develop its own ecosystem.

IN addition to technological innovation, Huawei CLOUD database also actively embraces CLOUD native. The design goal of GaussDB series of CLOUD native distributed databases is to make full use of the inherent capabilities of CLOUD infrastructure, from ON CLOUD, which is simply deployed ON the CLOUD and uses CLOUD resources, to IN CLOUD, which is fully integrated with CLOUD infrastructure and grows ON the CLOUD. Combined with cloud native capabilities, the GaussDB series databases provide consistent deployment across AZs, separation of storage and computation, extreme flexibility, hardware and software collaboration across multiple platforms, reliable data storage, and intelligent operation and maintenance (O&M) capabilities.

Peng Lixun think, want to let more enterprises onto the road of cloud native transformation, cloud vendors need to provide more efficient and stable, high security, such as customer is most concerned about the availability and flexibility of database, and safe and reliable, to ensure that the user’s data on the cloud is safe, any unauthorized access event will not occur. In addition, cost reduction and efficiency increase are all enterprises will consider the problem, cloud manufacturers through technical means, without affecting the user experience to help users reduce the use of cost.

Peng Lixun finally mentioned that technology is endless, cloud database has a long way to go in the future, open ecology, cloud native, intelligent operation and maintenance will be the future direction of development. I will continue to keep my feet on the ground, continue to deeply cultivate technology, inject a drop of fresh blood into the development of database with my own concentration and thinking, and make a contribution to the upgrade of enterprise intelligence.
