Two days ago, the news that an entrepreneurial programmer was forced to jump off a building by his ex-girlfriend hit the Internet.

One way of looking at it is that the programmer is too emotionally intelligent to jump off a building. It’s cruel, but I basically agree with that.

But I don’t really agree with the status quo. That is, a programmer, even a genius programmer, needs to be not too bad in areas other than programming, such as emotional intelligence and social interaction, in order to survive in society. Such “live”, the request to the person is too high.

Perhaps biology is more fully evolved by comparison. For example, if I ask what is the fastest animal, most people will say cheetahs. Yeah, that’s exactly what the cheetah does, and it’s what keeps it alive and famous. And because one trick can survive, it can evolve as much as possible in that direction, including all parts of the body. On the other hand, if the natural environment requires it to be as durable as an antelope, it will not catch the antelope, or even starve to death.

Of course, cheetahs need more than just running, they need camouflage and so on, but that’s just an example. I believe that as evolution deepens, some abilities strengthen and others degrade. Crucially, this step forward and step back, allows it to adapt to nature more easily.

Corresponding to human society, I think the principle is the same. We still hear a lot about “full stack” and “comprehensive capability,” but I think that’s an inadequate representation of human evolution. On the one hand, more abilities may become basic skills in the future, like breathing. On the other hand, fresh moves are more marketable.

Another point is that humanity as a whole does not need a bunch of mediocre generalists, but one who is extremely good at something. In this way, the sum of the capabilities is maximum. For example, you don’t need a bunch of scientists with 99 percent of Einstein’s ability but who are long-distance runners. You need 100 percent or even 200 percent of Einstein.
