A dark theme beloved by programmers

Many programmers prefer dark theme mode for their ides, and this open-source theme project, called Dracula, is for them. The open source theme is available on all three operating systems and currently supports more than 240 applications.

Dracula is a word that programmers are familiar with. The word Dracula can be found in almost every IDE theme. The original translation is “Dracula”, so it’s no wonder that “Dracula” 🧛 came to love black.

How important is a programmer’s English?

For those of you who regularly visit the Nuggets, you may have seen the article “2022, the front end of the day 🌦️ how to change?” My 5 Predictions for Frontend Trends in 2022, translated into Medium and set up for membership, has earned the authors over $50 and counting. This article is not translated by the original author. Out of respect for copyright, the translator has obtained a cooperative relationship with the original author before translating and publishing the article. The profit of the article is 55 percent.

This is not a difficult article to translate, at least two points can be seen from this example:

  1. Domestic high-quality technical articles can also be exported abroad.
  2. In a large group of programmers, English is a huge advantage.

In the past most of the time are input to the domestic of foreign technology and product innovation, many domestic products are copycats, with the development of mobile Internet, we finally stood in the same starting line, domestic also have some products began to be foreign to imitate, such as WeChat in explosion fire, many of the products abroad began to imitate it, The founder of Substack clearly expressed that he was inspired by the wechat public account. Although the wechat public account is an inspiration, it does not do as well as foreign platforms such as Substack and Medium in making money for creators. On the one hand, the content ecology is not open enough. Paying habits and consumption levels have not caught up. Content payment and knowledge monetisation are not new in China, but there has been a lack of such platforms for creators, and innovation in this area is lagging far behind. Incidentally, mirror.xyz/, which can post articles to earn ether, recently received a $60 million investment. Through these, it is not difficult to find another advantage of knowing English, which can help us find and understand foreign innovative products.

Using Medium, Substack and other platforms to make money from English plus technology is a great sideline.

How can programmers make money by writing tech blogs on Medium.com?

But this is not what many programmers are interested in, and English is vital to programmers in many other ways.

Some obvious things, such as improving the level of writing code and reading English articles, will not be mentioned, just take me as an example. During the years when I almost stopped learning English, my English seemed adequate enough to read technical articles in English and copy code on StackOverflow.

This level of English is mainly accumulated through previous experience:

  • I wrote codes to name variables. I used Youdao Dictionary to record new words in my early days, and before that, I recorded more than 5,000 words.
  • Self-study Lai Shixiong’s “American English from scratch”, this series of books more suitable for English beginners, did not learn, about half of the study.
  • I watched American TV series and movies, mainly Friends, more than twice.
  • Since about 13 or 14, I met technical problems and basically used English search, through which I read some English articles.

This year, I set the flag of writing newsletter every week and began to pick up the habit of reading a lot. In this process, I found That English had become a big bottleneck in the following two aspects.

  1. Many of the high-quality articles excavated are in English, and although reading these articles can be basically understood by translation, the reading efficiency is greatly reduced.
  2. Reading English, you can’t quickly scan for valuable information as effectively as you can in Chinese.

In 2022, set a new flag — learn English systematically again.

My week

  • Switch from FLOMO toWorkFlowy
    • It is mainly used to compile lists and Outlines, feishu’s thinking notes reference is this old product. Due to a lot of writing recently, I needed to make an outline, so I successively used FlOMO and Kinopio to record my temporary thoughts, but they were not easy enough. Finally, I used WorkFlowy. The advantage is that all notes are actually in one large nested list, making it very easy to refer to and record, and all the things recorded in it can actually be represented by a TXT format plain text, very convenient to save and backup.
