Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been honored with the 2020-2021 National Asian American Distinguished Engineer Lifetime Achievement Award, according to Nvidia. Organized by the Association of Chinese Engineers of America (CEA), the annual award is an annual celebration of Asian-Americans who have made outstanding contributions in the field of scientific and technological engineering.

Huang founded Nvidia in 1993. The citation cited Huang as “a visionary innovator of parallel computing technologies that has accelerated the realization of artificial intelligence”.

“It’s kind of strange to receive a lifetime achievement award,” Huang said in his acceptance speech at an online ceremony on July 18. “I feel like I’m just starting out, and so is Nvidia. Still, I am very grateful and honored to receive this award, which I will be sharing with my colleagues at Nvidia.”

“I was lucky to have a front row seat in the early days of computing,” Huang said, reflecting on his experience of studying, working and living in the U.S. as an immigrant and Asian-American, as well as the early days of Nvidia and the birth of GPU accelerated computing. We dreamed of solving major computing challenges and even imagined that one day we would be a major computing company.”

Since Nvidia introduced its first chip, the complexity of scenes in computer graphics has increased about 500 million times, Huang said. In addition to graphics, GPU acceleration is also being introduced into high-performance computing and artificial intelligence to solve previously impossible problems in fields like molecular biology.

“After nearly three decades, it is gratifying to see GPU-accelerated computing showing amazing results and being accepted by software developers and computer manufacturers around the world as an important tool for scientists and the engine of modern artificial intelligence.” “There’s probably no more exciting time to be an engineer than right now,” Huang said.

The National Asian Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) award was created in 2002 and is presented annually. There are now more than 300 laureates, including nine Nobel laureates such as Steven Chu, Steven Ting, astronauts and entrepreneurs such as Taiwan Semiconductor founder Chang Chung-mou.
