Editor’s note: On September 23, Huawei Cloud held the Online Huawei Fully Connected Conference. The theme of this year’s Fully Connected Conference was “Deep Digitization”, which discussed how all walks of life actively realize digital transformation through building cloud technology and cloud ecology. LiveVideoStack, the Top platform in the field of audio and video, also recently interviewed Lu Zhihang, senior product expert of Huawei cloud media service RTC, and he discussed topics such as Huawei cloud RTC technology, technical combination of 5G and RTC, and future application scenarios of RTC.

1. LiveVideoStack: Hello, Mr. Lu, please briefly introduce yourself and the technology you are interested in recently.

Lu Zhihang: Hello, readers of LiveVideoStack, I am Lu Zhihang, product director of Huawei Cloud RTC. Recently, I have paid more attention to the evolution of VIDEO codec H.266 and AV1, as well as the application of AI codec and semantic codec. At the same time, I have noticed that there is a good combination space between some technologies and RTC. For example, Serverless technology has matching application scenarios in collaborative RTC service and strong computing service (multi-protocol access, transcoding and recording). Also thinking about how the introduction of new technology can benefit more developers.

2. LiveVideoStack: What stage do you think RTC technology has developed to? In what aspects will the future still have relatively large development space?

Lu Zhihang: RTC currently slas have been able to meet the demands, the basis of the Internet phone can batch to expand business in the field of social, office, entertainment, subsequent to lower the evolvement of the technology of RTC time delay, a higher bit rate, programmable cloud native media network evolution direction of service, with the loss of the time delay and bit rate has increased, RTC can be combined with more industry, That is, we often say that the RTC+ scene will be more and more, RTC+IoT+AI can be applied to the industrial Internet, RTC+XR+IM can build a virtual world, RTC+ games may overturn the game industry.

3. LiveVideoStack: Delay, packet loss, and jitter are common problems in real-time communication. One of the main causes of these problems is network congestion. What is huawei Cloud’s experience in network congestion control?

Lu Zhihang:

1) Network congestion tuning is a systematic project, not a single technology to complete, the basic congestion control through bandwidth detection, prediction to make the decision of data sending, whether smooth or radical send;

2) At present, Huawei cloud ADAPTS to the increasingly complex network by introducing algorithms into it through AI, so as to judge the state of the network more sensitively and conduct corresponding transmission processing;

3) Consider efficiency and fairness in the control algorithm. Efficiency: Make “transmit rate” as close as possible to “available rate”, and keep the delay as low as possible delay; Fairness: under the condition of multi-channel competition with random background traffic, more high-definition and low latency service quality;

4) At the same time of software algorithm optimization, Huawei Cloud is also committed to making joint efforts with global operators to create a highly available global minimalist network and solve the problem of cross-continent, cross-operator and difficult coverage in marginal areas.

4. LiveVideoStack: In today’s increasingly video content, RTC (real-time communication) market competition is becoming more and more fierce, what do you think is the competitive advantage of Huawei cloud in the FIELD of RTC?

Lu Zhihang:

1) Huawei’s audio and video technology accumulated over the past 30 years and its understanding of communication transmission network can be quickly combined in the field of RTC;

  1. 2500+ sites worldwide and huawei cloud network provide high experience and low cost access experience.

  2. Huawei has been pursuing trusted software technology and has obvious advantages in security, privacy and legal affairs, such as supporting legitimate voice and video calls from Europe to mainland China under the GDPR.

5. LiveVideoStack: As we all know, Huawei’s 5G technology is in a leading position in the world, so what deployment has Huawei cloud made in the combination of RTC and 5G technology?

Lu Zhihang: Huawei cloud through joint source channel, from 5 g access to core network yuan level real dot link quality, realize the RTC business network quality real-time visual message level, at the same time through video link quality detection, AI AI channel code, implement frame level detection and control codes, source faster response channel change, under the condition of weak network can significantly improve the RTC experience. At the same time, 5G slicing and RTC traffic scheduling algorithm based on service QoE are adopted to realize different transmission priority control and guarantee the experience of various SLA levels.

6. LiveVideoStack: With the advent of video, bandwidth costs are rising. How do you make sure you get clear video and save bandwidth? What are the measures of Huawei Cloud?

Lu Zhihang: huawei did a lot of work for hd low bit direction, take advantage of the thirty years on video codec research, at the same time, made a start in the closed and receiving combined subjective perception to build a new coding ability, under the same image quality as a whole than traditional H264 encoder, such as compression ratio increase more than double, AI combination and receiving through out the subjective images of high fluency. At the same time, rational use of OverLay dynamic network path planning can reduce the use of high-cost bandwidth.

7. LiveVideoStack: In addition to live delivery, video conferencing, online classroom, telemedicine, what other RTC application scenarios do you think have great potential and are likely to explode in the future?

Lu Zhihang: I think the future application scenarios of RTC in cloud gaming, virtual reality, industrial Internet and other fields are very broad. At the same time, the traditional industry of audio and video calls, such as seats, call centers, remote interviews, etc., will be replaced by RTC.

Lu Zhihang: I joined Huawei after I graduated with a master’s degree in 2014. The biggest gain comes from the global vision provided by the company platform and the rapid growth brought by working with the industry elites gathered by the company.
