In August 1991, Linus announced that he was working on a Linux kernel, declaring, “It won’t be big and professional.” He speaks modestly, but Linux has become the world’s most ubiquitous operating system. Today, the Linux kernel forms the basis of the Linux operating system and permeates almost every industry application. Linus created Git in just 10 days in 2005, when there were no free and open source version control tools available for managing very large projects like the Linux kernel. Today, Git is almost standard for software development and other versioning tasks.
